I nod. "So you just wanted to build up your pack?" I ask. "Yeah," he replies. I smile. "I understand. It must've been a hard time for you," I whisper. He nods.

Then, to my surprise, he throws his arms around me and begins to cry into my shoulder, where the mark was. I don't know what to do, so I simply cradle his head in my arms and sing a quiet lullaby.

After a while, David finally calms down, his red eyes the only sign he had been crying. He wipes his face. "Sorry," he mutters. "It's ok," I say. "I understand how you feel. I really do." He looks at me and smiles. I smile back.

"So why me?" I ask after an awkward moment of deafening silence. He looks up, clearly surprised. He smiles and takes my hand. "Well, like every leader of a wolf pack, I need a mate, a Luna. I've been watching you for quite some time now and I think you're it."

I'm baffled. Absolutely baffled. I pull away from him, instinctively. "Me? Your mate? No thank you," I say. He grins. "I'm afraid I won't take no as an answer," he says.

My heart stops. "What?!" I demand. "You are choosing me to become your mate and I don't have a choice in it?!" He smiles again. "Yep." I feel anger boiling in my veins. "I don't care! I don't care if I get a say in this or not! I'm not becoming your mate! I'm only 16!" I cry, throwing my arms up in despair.

Then my voice softens. "I'm sorry. I can't." I turn away, walking towards my parents, leaving him further and further behind. Tears were bubbling in my eyes.

Why? Why me? Why couldn't it be some other girl in my grade or something? Why did it have to be me?
