Lesson 18: Be A Once In A Lifetime Kind Of Woman

I smiled at nothingness. I had been doing that too much lately but I couldn't help it. The mouthwatering aroma from the barbeque waft over to me and filled my lungs.

"You know you're supposed to help us," Jack pointed out. I lifted my head up so I could glance at him and Hudson who were tending said barbeque.

"Who said that?" I teased.

"You before you lay down on the sand," Hudson pointed out. I shrugged and lowered my head.

"Okay. It smells great. Shall I help you by tasting the food?"

"That's what Carter said. Though he said it smelt 'good' not great."

"Carter is a lazy ass," I stated nonchalantly.

"And you aren't?" Jack questioned raising an eyebrow.

I smiled at him. "Not even close."

"Well tasting will take a while. You're useless."

"Why, thanks! Well if you want help ask your girlfriends," I pointed out. I saw Hudson look out at the horizon at Sandy who was not too far away. Jack looked out to but at Hailey.

"I don't have a girlfriend," Jack mumbled and looked down back at the sizzling grill. I sat up and gave a knowing look.

"You don't think I can't see those little glances you give her. You're more than infatuated Jack my friend. You're whipped."

Jack didn't say anything. I was right - of course I was. "I don't like her..." he trailed pathetically. I rolled my eyes at him and Hudson did the same. I bet even to his own ears he sounded weak.

"Liar, liar pants on fire!" I teased. "C'mon. You like her. She likes you. Why is it so difficult? Why did you tell her that what happened at the party was a mistake?"

Silence was Jack's response. He fiddled around with the chicken pieces before giving out a long sigh. "Because we were drunk. If we were meant to get together it wasn't supposed to be through alcohol."

"Ah. Well if you love the poor girl then tell her! It's not fair on her. Do you have any idea how much ice cream I've consumed because of you?"

"And still looking fine. If I say so myself," a new voice added. I shipped my head to the side and saw Carter. He winked at me.

"Pervert," I commented. He rolled his eyes at me, the smirk I was beginning to love snuck onto his lips.

I couldn't help but scan his ensemble. Why did the indentations of his muscles have to show through that t-shirt of his? And how could he rock such a casual look?

"Says the girl who is checking me out as we speak," he replied cockily. My eyes widened fractionally, I hadn't realised that I was being obvious.

"I'm just wondering how Sandy let you walk out with that on. Those shorts don't go with that tee." I grimaced to make my statement more believable. He arched an eyebrow; it was then I realised I was still perched on the sand.

I looked back at Jack, trying to remember our previous conversation. "Carter, don't you think Jack should confess his everlasting love for Hailey already?"

"Definitely. Dude, grow some balls."

"Says you. Don't get me started with - "

"You know, I think you should do whatever you want," Carter interjected abruptly. I gave him a weird look - hoping he would elaborate but he shrugged.

"Am I the only one here with a pair of balls?" Hudson asked.

"Nope. Sandy told me she confessed before you did," I pointed out. Hudson scowled, his question had bit him in the back. "But that doesn't matter." I stood up and faced Jack. "You need to talk to her and I swear if you don't or if you break her heart anymore than it is, I will kick your ass."
