Lesson 23: Return Back From Neverland

I sighed in contentment as the boat stopped. They had seen the firework blown into the air via flare gun. Which we were lucky to find; it was hidden in a compartment deep in the lifeboat. I could just about make out a lifeboat lowering and two people coming off simultaneously.

"We're saved," I breathed out. I looked back at Carter, my cheat tightened and my knees weakened.

"Yes, we are," he added. His eyes met mine. He smiled, my breath got caught in my throat.

"Any last words before we rejoin civilisation?" I asked teasingly.

He grabbed my hand and tugged me closer to him. I let his body brush mine without resisting.

"I thought this was a great adventure," he said. "But I wouldn't want a repeat of it, falling from that window ledge was a bitch."

I chuckled. "Well it was fun... after we stopped screaming for our lives."

We watched the lifeboat move closer and closer to the island. When instructed, we walked into the water - I grabbed Carter's hand as if there was no tomorrow - and we got in.

"How long have you two been out here?" The less bulkier of the two asked.

"Since yesterday afternoon? We washed up here at sunset, I think," Carter asked. He nodded and passed us a blanket and a packet of biscuits each.

"Thank you," I said in relief and tried hard to open the packing like a normal human being.

"How did you two get out here?" The older asked. He held a oar and started to paddle back to the boat.

"You're not going to believe this but, someone pushed me into a lifeboat and Carter tried to save me but he fell too... and the rope holding the boat snapped so we fell..." I recalled.  He gave us a weird look but didn't question it. I took out a biscuit and nibbled on it slowly. My stomach rumbled loudly, despite the mango I had consumed earlier.

"I've never heard of story like that but as long as you're safe," the first one said. They rowed us to the boat quickly. We lifted up and confronted by a crowd of people. The two men ushered us to the middle deck and got us some proper food. Carter tried to pay but according to them the Captain requested it to be for free. We were stranded out at sea after all.

After a quick dinner, Carter had been given a phone to call from. He called Sandy and from the sounds of it she was a wreck.

"Bree! You're alive! Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry we left it off like that and I'm so happy to talk to you! I've been so worried, you didn't pick up your phone and you never came back to the hotel and I heard about what Luke did! What an asshole! Does Carter know what he did? I swear if I ever see him again I will - nevermind that! You were with Carter the whole time right? He said you fell off a boat and washed up on an island, you must be shattered. Uh, Bree are you there?" It was a wonder how I could fathom Sandy at the speed she spoke.

But, I just smiled and hoped she could tell that I was smiling. "It's great to talk to you too Sandy, wow I feel like I haven't heard your voice in ages. I'm fine and yeah we did fall off a boat and wash up on an island. No, Carter doesn't know about what Luke did. I am kind of tired, I just feel surreal... does that answer your questions?"

"And she speaks! And it does but one last one, when will you two be getting back?"

"We were told in about 15 minutes and before you ask we'll be by the docking station. I don't know which one, but there's only two anyway," I answered.

"Consider all of us there!"

"Oh Sandy, no need I bet we're just going to go back to the hotel and sleep - I am anyway." My eyes flickered to Carter, he was at least two metres away looking at the ocean. I couldn't tell if he was able to hear me.
