Consciousness comes back to me in a tidal wave of immense pain in my thigh. I try to move but my body refuses to respond. Then the rest of my senses start to work and I hear growls nearby. As I crack open my eyes, I both feel and see Dmitri still in his lethal, bloodthirsty form advancing on the wolf who was trying to kill me.

They both growl at each other before crashing into one another, both their blood red eyes blinded by rage and the craving to kill. I watch on, my vision blurring occasionally, as Dmitri takes chunks out of the other werewolf, relentlessly attacking his opponent as if it was casual to just rip into fur and flesh so easily.

Looking down at my leg, I notice the large amounts of blood staining the forest ground and a rising sense of panic fills me; if I didn't get this stitched up I'd bleed out completely...and not heal. I attempt getting up, pushing to my elbows but the pain in my thigh shoots up resulting in me letting out a gasp of pain.

"Dmitri." I croak, seeking his help and attention.

I just hoped he still saw me as his mate in this other more violent wolf form.

He stops suddenly and his steady gaze meets mine, hackles rising and his teeth bared towards me.

I had to find a way to get through to him this way but before I could even think of anything further, the other werewolf takes Dmitri's distracted gaze on me to lunge towards him. Sinking his teeth into my mate on a loud growl; Dmitri lets out a howl so loud that I almost feel my bones reverberating from it.

My mate quickly responds by ramming the werewolf into a thick tree repeatedly, despite the pain that he was also probably causing to himself, until I hear something crack. The werewolf instantly lets go of Dmitri and he takes that moment to rip into the wolf's neck, jerking his head violently as blood sprayed everywhere and the Werewolf who was meant to kill me falls to the ground in a heap of death.

Feeling myself start to hyperventilate at the scene before, I once again attempt to back away but the pain in my thigh stops me from moving further. Dmitri turns to face me, his muzzle bloody and teeth stained red and he stalks towards me, a growl rumbling low in his chest.

"You need to shift back." I say weakly but it falls on deaf ears.

My hair whips back as Dmitri's monstrous wolf snarls violently in my face and I close my eyes

~Reach out to him~ My wolf urges.

I'm trying!

~Try harder!~

Ignoring the pain in my thigh with utmost concentration, I struggle to sit up, leaning my back against the tree trunk behind me and every fibre in my body screams in protest. My face is inches away from Dmitri and I notice the strain around his red irises; was he also struggling to shift back into his human form?

When a werewolf shifts, our human side stays locked inside whilst our wolf form is out and in control, almost like when we are in human form and our wolf form is inside only we can shift without the interference of our wolves.

Being bit by a vampire must've been was caused his other wolf of his to be in more control than usual and therefore be much harder to shift back.

"I know you're in there Dmitri so I need you to fight this and shift." I beg, reaching out despite the warning growls coming from him.

When my hand reaches his side, I almost flinch at the coldness of his body but instead sink my hands further into his thick fur causing him to stiffen briefly.

My vision threatens to blur once again and I almost fear that I'd pass out again only the fur beneath my hands disappear suddenly; Dmitri shuffles away from me but what looked like another force was pulling him towards me with a narrowed gaze.

He was trying to fight it.

I notice how his eyes shift from a crimson to his usual storm grey colour as he continues to struggle to move away from me.

"Come on, you can do this." I murmur, ignoring the alarming fact that I could no longer feel one side of my whole body.

Suddenly, Dmitri lets out a blood chilling howl before he drops to the ground as he shifts to his human form but his wolf form fights back, causing his bones to repeatedly break and shift in different angles. I scrunch my eyes closed as I hear his groans and cries of pain, my stomach turning at the sight of him in so much pain.

Did he go through this every time his bad wolf came out?

For a moment everything is silent and I slowly open one eye before doing the same to the other when I see Dmitri lay on the ground in his human form, a sheen of sweat covering his body as his breathing comes out laboured.

I let out a sigh of relief and suddenly I feel cold all over, my body no longer feeling like mine as my eyes slowly start to drift closed.

"Cassandra." I faintly hear Dmitri.

Something touches the back of my neck and only then do I realise that I'd let my head flop forwards. There is pressure on my bleeding thigh but I no longer feel the pain.

"I'm...so tired." I whisper before I let my heavy eyelids close.

[Dmitri]

The Alpha watches as his mate falls unconscious in his arms, the copious amounts of blood on the ground giving away the fact that Cass was dying.

"No, no, no you're not tired, Cass stay with me." Dmitri places both his hands between her face and presses his lips against her clammy forehead.

She lets out a small noise as her eyes crack open only slightly but it was enough to reassure Dmitri that his mate wasn't gone just yet.

"I'm going to lift you, tell me if anything hurts." He murmurs, eyes clouded with worry and outright fear of losing everything once again.

"Can't...feel." Cass croaks.

Dmitri feels his heart stutter at this fact, spurring him to quicken his pace as he lifts Cass and runs back to the car, ignoring the dead bodies of the rogues.

Once Cass is in the car, Dmitri grabs the spare clothes in the trunk of the car and throws them on, jumping into the car and ringing his Beta up at the same time.

"I've been trying to get to you for the past hour, Nicholas' rouges tried attacking the pack but we dealt with it." Logan rushes as soon as he picks up.

Dmitri drives around all the bodies before slamming his foot on the accelerator, weaving around honking cars.

"Get the doctor ready as soon as we get there, Cass is badly injured." He says evenly but inside he was brewing with an anger that felt almost blinding.

How could he let his poisoned wolf get to him him this way and risk killing Cass himself?

There is a moment of silence before Logan responds.

"What happened?"

"Just do what I fucking said." Dmitri snaps before throwing his phone over his shoulder.

Glancing over at Cass who was now beginning to take on a paler complexion, his hard, grey eyes soften slightly and he reaches over to grab her cold hand, lifting it up and pressing it against his lips.

"You're gonna be okay, angel."
