A Little Word Called Love

Part 15: It's Been a Long Day

"We have to find a place before nightfall," John said to the rest "That's the plan."

"I still kinda don't feel comfortable with leaving them over a stupid decision," Tiffany pointed out.

"Then you should have stayed with them," Nik declared "Once you make a choice you gotta stick with it."

They were walking up the same street that lead them to the boat repair place which was completely deserted "We know this Mr...whats your name again?" BB said.

"Nik Pines," he said "Don't suppose you have a last name too?"

"Ponce," she said "And we have survived this long haven't we?"

"I guess...but one of us is going to die. Hey John is Jorge your brother?"

"Twin brother," he let out a relieved sigh "Never thought this would split us up...he is blinded if he thinks they will survive."

"Two sets of twins split up...what are the odds?" he responded.

"I don't know just keep your guard up for anything. Nik, how much ammo do you have?"

"Just this glock and an extra clip. I was a police officer before all this happened," Nik quickly responded and explained how he got the gun "What about you guys?"

"I got this rifle, a pistol, and knife with more ammo in my bag. Along with Tiffany having that assault rifle, pistol, and knife and BB having her katana and pistol only."

"Where are you from?"

"Sarasota...you?"

"Damn well I was with the Miami Police Department."

"A local?" John realized he could use that to his advantage "So you know your way around Miami?"

"Of course," Nik unquestioningly remarked "But I wouldn't recommend you go into the city for obvious reasons."

"Do you know your way around this area then?"

"Yes, I know a place we can go. The draw bridge that connects two of the pieces of land up ahead..that is if it hasn't collapsed yet."

"Biggest lead we got so lets go."

Tiffany wanted to say something but quickly kept her mouth shut. BB noticed and asked "What were you going to say?"

"Well, I was just wondering how far it is from here."

Nik said "A little over a mile."

*30 minutes later*

They arrived at the draw bridge to see the other half to be completely collapsed. John commented "Well at least the whole thing isn't gone." The other half of the draw bridge was laying down in the ocean and leaning up against the other side at an angle. On the side that was still standing there was wrecked cars that appeared to be completely abandoned.

"The people in these cars must have seen the bridge across them fall and were afraid this side was going to fall as well so they all just ran that must be why I don't see any creepers what so ever," Nik exclaimed.

"You ladies wanna go swimming?" John chuckled as he set down his stuff against a car and went up to the edge judging the distance between the bridge and water "I would think its about a 500 foot drop."

"No thanks," Tiffany said.

BB played along with him "Yeah sure except I don't have a bathing suit."

"No one said you needed one," Nik jokingly remarked.

"Hush you," she said back.

John got serious again and said "Let set up a small camp within these cars."

They found a large enough gap between a few cars to set up a fire and the cars weren't damaged at all so they could sleep in them for the night. The sun was setting slowly but surely as Nik's stomach started rumbling. Nik finally wanted to say "What are we going to eat?"

"We have food," John said to him "Only dry and canned goods though. Not much but it should last us for the night and morning. After that I'm not so sure."

"We can figure that out when we get there," Nik said and sighed "It's been a long day."

"Let's eat and then we should get some rest after walking that much today," John said.

After the small but sufficient meal John stated "Lock the doors to the car you're sleeping in and have a nice night."

*THE NEXT MORNING*

"JOHN!" BB yelled while hitting the glass on his car "We gotta go! Come on get up."

He was awoken immediately to see a hoard of infectors swarming towards them from the end of the bridge. He quickly got out from the car and grabbed his stuff. Nik was trying to fight them off killing a few of them and only making them more riled up and set on the group.

"Shit!" Nik yelled while running out ammo in his clip and loading another one. He began to back up over the cars. BB, Tiffany, and John were at the side railing at the edge of the bridge trying to get Nik to come over to them.

"COME ON NIK!" John yelled for him.

Infectors intercepted Nik before he could reach the rest and was pulled into a furious bite given by one of them. He screeched as he shot the one who bit him. As another came and tackled him to the ground and began chewing his insides leaving a pool of blood surrounding him.

"NO!" BB said as she began to shoot into the crowd of infectors.

"There is no where to go!" Tiffany was saying in fear.

John looked over the railing "Yes there is," He threw his stuff over the railing  "Lets go!" he commanded, diving into the ocean water below.

BB was the next person to jump dragging Tiffany with her and their stuff. They impacted the water making a massive splash. Once they all were above the water's surface to catch their breath they could see infectors falling limbless towards the water on all sides of the bridge.

"Come on," John said while panting and holding his stuff out of the water as much as possible "Let's get to shore. Slowly swimming towards the beach across the other side, they dragged themselves on land and caught their breath.

"That was scary as fuck!" Tiffany exclaimed.

"Well at least you didn't end up like Nik," BB pointed out.

John stood up "That was one hell of a way to wake up."

BB began to explain what happened "I was the first one up so I wanted to take watch. I'm glad I woke up when I did to warn everyone about that hoard which was really close when I started to be the look out."

"Should we go back to the others?" Tiffany asked while still trying to catch her breath.

"No, we just keep going."
