We Were Best Friends…..
Chapter Four
‘Patrol and Parties’
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adrian drove his pickup truck down town to a small diner we usually went to for lunch a couple days of the week. He parked in the normal parking space and turned the key to turn the car off before facing me. “Want some lunch?” he asked me. I smiled and nodded, my blond pony-tail bouncing.
I was about to open my car door when I saw a flash of red in the corner of my eye. Directing my eyes toward the movement, I saw no red. There was someone with a dark blue jacket on the other side of the street with the hood covering their head. There were sunglasses over the person’s eyes, shielding them from the world.
“You okay?” Adrian asked, opening my door for me as I studied the person who was sitting on the bench.
I nodded. “I’m fine, thanks for asking.” Hopping out of the car, I followed Adrian to the diner for some lunch. But, before I entered the diner, I looked back to see the stranger had left and was nowhere in sight. Good, I didn’t need anyone messing with me today.
Inside the diner, we set out a plan. We would start patrolling uptown in our neck of the woods before moving towards the west. As soon as we got that neighborhood down, we would start moving downtown, which would take a few hours to navigate through. As soon as we got done downtown, we’d move to the outer parts of Kingsley City. This would take about five to six hours at most, maybe seven, depending on the traffic. With each minute of waiting I became even antsier making me even less patient than I already was with my headache.
“My god, Adrian, can we not do this all in one day? Why don’t we just start with our neighborhood first, then go to other places. I don’t want to catch her in one day. That won’t be fun, and I love a good chase. Plus, it’s nice to get out of HQ for a while. We haven’t had a vacation in so long.” I laid back into the booth, closing my eyes for a moment.
Looking outside, I saw blue skies and plenty of white fluffy clouds. I knew I go take the opportunity to go see my parents, who I hadn’t seen in a long time. The last time I had had a vacation was last Christmas, six months before when I visited my parents, who complained that I didn’t visit often enough. I apologized and explained to them that my employer was very strict and barely gave any vacations to anyone unless if they were seriously ill or on the holidays.
Adrian sighed. “Fine, go off and vacation. Who knows how many criminals will be on the loose after we’re finished with this assignment.” He shook his head. “We’re some of the hardest workers there. We need to get this assignment done and over with, just like any other assignment.”
I stared at my best friend. “Adrian…. This doesn’t feel like a regular assignment to me. This is something new and dangerous. Something only we were assigned to by the elders when we were at the meeting, which never happens to anyone. Out of everyone there, we’re the ones that were given this chance to prove ourselves to them. They gave us all the time in the world. Some people don’t even come back from regular missions, which tells you how dangerous this should be.
“What I’m trying to say is….I want a break from the organization for a while. It’s always ‘kill this person’ or ‘this guy is bad, kill him’ and stuff like that. I want a break from that. I mean, it’s not like they’re going to miss us, especially Thor.”
