We Were Best Friends…
Chapter Five
Target Spotted
*******************************************
And there I was, running down dark streets and deserted allies at eleven in the evening. Well, I didn’t know the exact time, but I guessed it was eleven. Hopefully, I would catch the target and be done with this mission.
Every step brought me closer to the red haired girl. I’d been tailing her for quite some time, but I hadn’t the slightest idea exactly who she was or how long I’d been following her. I could hear the clack of thick heels against the pavement, giving me the information that this was, indeed, a girl, along with the flapping of her blue skirt in the wind I saw every time she turned a corner.
Running, I tried calling Adrian, but with no use. I couldn’t reach the boy until he turned on his phone, which could take forever. Who knows how many friends that boy had in High School, especially with his status in the organization?
Each corner brought new obstacles, which would usually slow me down, depending on the object. It almost reminded me of an obstacle course of which my high school had made some years earlier. It was made of mostly logs and rope, which our gym teacher made us run every spring, when the air was warm and we could finally go outside after a cold winter. Though, it was colder in Kingsley than back home in Ember. Everyone had to run it unless if an individual had a medical problem like a broken leg, which a friend of mine had freshman year.
I almost took a head on collision with a latter from one of the apartments above. We had reached the center of the city, where more of the apartments and older buildings were. Even the police station was down there, but the crime rate was terrible in the area I was in. Finally, after endless ally ways, I was finally led onto an open street where I could see the person I was chasing.
“End of the line,” the person said. It was deffinetly a girl by the voice and the long red hair. She was dressed in a black cardigan, making her almost bled into the night along with her dark jeans. Compaired to me and my dress, she was dressed more for athletics than me.
“Who are you?” I called to the girl.
I could just see her smirk. “It’s been a long time….Riley.” She turned around to face me, for me to see those eyes I hadn’t seen in six years.
“Hanna!”
She was smirking. “That’s right. I never thought I’d see you again after I found out you left Ember. I especially didn’t think I’d see you working for ‘them’,” she sneered.
“Hanna….You’re….You’re…..”
“-the one your boss wants to kill?” she finished for me. “I know.”
“But, why?” I was dumbfounded, surprised by the fact my target ended up being my best friend….well, the best friend I use to have.
“I have no time for this Riley. Step down or prepare to fight…..if you’re not chicken.”
I drew my sword, content with the fact that I should win this fight. “Bring it.”
And so began the fight.
