I walk up to the old, abandoned house. Hearing the sound of movement inside.
I walk in, the door creaking as I open it. I step on a piece of wood and listen to it as it snaps.
"Liz?" I walk into the living room, looking at Liz standing in the center of the room underneath of a large banner saying "Happy 9th BIRTHDAY!" The word "9th" was crossed out and replaced with "17th".
I smile and walk in further, seeing that the floor was cleared of wood and other debris.
"This is the house we would come to when we were sad, right?" I look around the interior and sigh. "We would always try to cheer each other up." Visions of us in the house flash in my mind.
"Yeah. We would call it 'The House Of Broken Dreams', right, Rain?" She smiles at me and giggle slightly. "We would always leave our broken dreams here and create new ones."
I laugh.
"Because of you, I'm remembering so much, you know?" I look at the ground. "I never got to say good-bye... I'm sorry."
"It's alright. What matters now is that we get to celebrate this birthday. Together." She smiles and hugs me. She's warm... I forgot how warm hugs were...
I hesitate for a moment, but hug her back. I pull away from her after a few short moments and I look around the room, noticing a cake on the table in the corner of the room. My favorite kind, a white cake with strawberries and strawberry whipped cream topping.
"Why would you do this for someone who forced himself to forget everything about you?" I ask curiously, still guilty.
"Because you were my best friend, no matter what you did." She scoffs. "Yeah it hurt that you forgot about me, but you're still my best friend. And best friends stick together."
She smiles and walks over to the cake. She picks it up, walking over toward the center of the room. She sits down and pull a small steak knife out of a box. She cuts the cake and hands me a slice, deciding not to bother with utensils or plates.
"Happy birthday, Rain." She smiles at me.
"Thanks, Liz." I take a small bite out of my cake, holding it delicately between my fingers.
She takes a bite after me and takes the strawberry off the top of hers. She takes a bit out of it and her face scrunches up.
"These are sour!" She and I laugh at the same time.
"Just the way I like it." I take the strawberry off of mine and take a bite out of it.
