All Rain ever knew was the feeling of being alone. He never had any friends. That is, until the day the new girl saved him from the darkness of his heart.

The bell rings for the end of the day and I head home. I turn around and find Liz right behind me.
"Where are you going?" I ask her curiously and turn around again.
"I'm going home. Same as you." She takes large steps, similar to the kind you'd see a girl take in an anime.
I take my earbuds out of my pockets and put them in my ears. I turn on my music and continue walking home. She turns down a street when I'm halfway home. I continue walking and eventually reach my house.
No one's home, so I unlock the door and walk into the living room, the T.V. blaring.
"They left the television on again..." I grab the remote and turn off the T.V., heading down the hall to my room.
I flop onto the bed and flip through the songs on my iPod. I don't feel like listening to anything right now.
I pull the earbuds out, laying them and the iPod onto the bedside table. I put my left arm over my eye and close them. I start thinking.
I remember her, but I don't at the same time... If it's really been as long as she said, I should have been able to still remember her... I have an excellent memory.
About an hour later, I fall asleep.
I wake up later, my mother unlocking and opening the door. I sit up and rub the sleep out of my eyes.
"Rain, honey! Are you home?" She calls from the living room.
"Yeah, I'm home." I get up and walk down the hall to the living room. She's sitting in the armchair, her auburn hair spread out on the fabric behind her head.
I walk into the kitchen and grab a granola bar and a small glass of milk. I walk back into the living room and set the granola and milk on the table next to my mother.
"Thank you, Rain." She gives me an exhausted smile before taking a small sip of the milk.
"No problem, mom." I give her a small smile back before heading back to my room, falling asleep again.
Liz appears in my dreams. She's sitting on a swing set. It all seems so familiar. I watch as my vision starts to get closer. I'm running to her. I feel a huge smile appear on my face.
"Hey Liz! Wanna see who can swing the highest?" I grin brightly.
"Sure! I saved this one for you!" She gives me a great big, shining smile.
I jump onto the swing, racing her to see who can go the highest.
I end up flying off, not holding on tight enough to the chains. I land on my feet, glad that I wasn't flat on my face.
I look back to Liz and get a huge smile. A smile so big that I can't open my eyes.
When I do open my eyes, she isn't there anymore. I look around, searching for her, but there's no trace except for her little blue bowtie that's laying on the ground next to the still swinging seat.
"Liz? Liz, where are you?!" I turn around, finding myself still completely all alone, but a banner hanging from a tree saying "HAPPY 9TH BIRTHDAY, RAIN!!"
I wake up, caked with sweat. It was hot as hell in here... I check the clock.
