"Matthew?" I heard someone say in my sleep.
I rolled away from whoever was disrupting my sleep, but when I realized who it was, I shot up in bed. Jack was sitting up. His hair was a mess and he had bags under his eyes.
"Hey, baby, how are you?" I asked, taking his hand.
"I have a headache." He whispered.
I reached over into my side drawer and pulled out a medicine bottle. I handed it to Jack. "Take two."
I handed him the water bottle that was on my nightstand and I saw him down the pills. He looked up at me with a confused look as he ran his hand through his hair.
"What happened last night?" He whispered.
I sighed and pulled him into my lap. "Someone spiked your drink at the club."
"Who?"
"Do you remember the bartender?"
He thought for a second and his face cleared. "The creepy guy?"
I nodded. "Yeah, that guy."
"Why? What was wrong with me?"
"I don't know, baby. My father is on it."
"Could he be a hunter?" Jack whispered, fear on his face.
"We really don't know anything yet, Jack. We're all working on it."
"Okay." He said, setting his head on my shoulder.
"I love you, Jack."
"I love you too."
Jack and I were laying down in the courtyard where there were a lot of people talking and playing around. Jack was sitting between my legs and we were looking at the kids playing.
"They're so cute." He whispered.
I ran my hand through his hair and he looked up at me with a smile. He closed his eyes and seemed to start falling asleep.
"Matthew!" Father said, running over.
I looked up at him with a worried expression and Jack sat up. "What's going on?"
"Jack, get up now." Father said and helped him stand up.
"What's going on, Father?" I snapped.
"We found out what happened last night."
Jack was trembling now, so I pulled him into my arms so his head was in my chest. I cleared my throat. "What happened?"
"Hunters are after him again. I had someone go to the club this morning and they asked about the James guy. They found out his full name and we talked to the elders."
"What'd they say?"
"James is the leader of one of the biggest hunter packs in Virginia."
Jack whimpered and that's when we heard the reloading of guns in the woods. Father started yelling orders to everyone and I pulled Jack inside.
"Matthew," Father said and I turned to face him. "stay inside for this. Please."
I nodded and took Jack up into my room. He had tears running down his face. I pulled him into my lap and ran my hands down his back.
"I'm going to protect you. I won't leave your side, I promise."
"People are going to get hurt because of me. I need to go out there. If I-" He started freaking out, so I grabbed him and held him to me.
