Chapter 5: Company

"Well?" Joel asked impatiently. "I uh, Sir, I ran away from home. Which is smaller settlement about 15 miles of here." Don spoke up. Joel gave Don a hard look. "Why did you run away?" Joel worried this would influence Ellie to do something foolish. "There was nothing for me there. My parents were cruel and didn't care for me." Don looked straight into Joel's eyes. "Why the hell do you think we'd just let you in?" Joel lowly said. "Joel... He's our guest," Tommy touched Joel's shoulder. Joel tensed up and turned around to see Tommy. "I guess you can stay, but don't do anything stupid." Joel mumbled and walked off. "What's your name, son?" Tommy asked. "Don.' Don responded. "Good to have you, how bout Ellie shows you around?" Tommy smiled and looked at Ellie. Ellie smiled and nodded. "Alright this way." Ellie pulled on Don's hand. 

"What the hell is wrong with you, Joel?" Tommy walked up to Joel. "Tommy, do you not realize what is within 15 miles of this Settlement?" Joel growled. Tommy looked at Joel and didn't say anything. "That's Hunter property. That boy is a spy and you trust him to come on to this land? That's god damn stupid!" Joel protested. "We don't know that for sure. But I trust that boy." Tommy frowned. 

"So, let me get this right. You're dad, or surrogate dad, is Joel. Tommy is his brother who married to the leader Maria. They have a son named Richard. And your Joel's daughter?" Don asked for clarification. "Yep. That's it." Ellie laughed. "Seems like a lot, but it's not." Don laughed as well. The door to the house opened and Joel walked in. "Hey, Joel. " Ellie called. "Ellie.... I didn't quite catch your name." Joel looked at Don. "It's Don, Sir." Don responded quickly."You don't need to call me Sir, son." Joel stared at Don. "Ok," Don nodded. "So where are you staying?" Ellie asked. "With you guys?" Don shrugged. "Uh, Uh. No you go to Tommy and have find you a place to stay." Joel quickly said. "Go do that now." Joel finished. Don nodded and walked out the door. "We need to talk." Joel spoke. Ellie sighed. "What now?" Joel gave a hard look. "Oh C'mon!" Ellie knew exactly what he was talking about. "You were going down in the forest to see him. Weren't you?" Joel frowned. "So what? It's not like we did anything." Ellie yelled. Joel gave her a cold look. "What are you so afraid of? Hmm?" Ellie asked impatiently. Joel continued to look at her and shook his head. "I don't know what I ever did. You used to be the best. We used to go fishing and hunting together but... All of a sudden the answer I got from you was always No. It's like you don't trust me with privileges." Ellie had a sign of trying to hold back tears. Joel sighed and walked off into his room. "Fine walk off! See if I care!" Ellie yelled back at him. She walked into her room and shut the door. What did she do wrong?

~Flashback~

Ellie and Joel walked up a large hill. "Ok I give up, where are you taking me?" Ellie asked. "It's a surprise." Joel smiled. "Ok, close your eyes." Joel smirked. "Fine," Ellie rolled her eyes and covered her eyes with the palm of her hands. Ellie could tell they were ontop of a hill. "Can I look now?" Ellie chuckled. "Go ahead." Ellie reopened her eyes to see the most beautiful view of Wyoming. The Mountain and the lake were gorgeous. "Oh my god! Joel thank you!" Ellie hugged Joel. "Happy Birthday, Baby Girl." Joel smiled.

Ellie had turned 17 that Summer. She still didn't know what had tore her and Joel apart. Ellie walked out of her room and slowly opened Joel's door to see him looking out the window. Ellie walked up to him to see he was looking at a picture of him and Sarah. "Do you miss her?" Ellie asked. "Or course." Joel sighed. "But I have you," Joel looked down at her. Then Ellie finally got it. "You don't want to lose me. That's why you're so over protective." Ellie looked up at him. "I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I lost you. It would be my fault." Joel sighed. Ellie looked out the window and sighed.
