A/N: This is Martha x Mickey. It takes place right after Journey's End, I don't remember exactly what happened in that last moment with them and I couldn't find a clip on YouTube so correct me in the comments if I get something wrong. The video in the media panel is by Louise1552 and is to the song "We Are Broken" by Paramore.
Mickey jogged to catch up with Jack and Martha. "Mind if I join you guys?"
"Not at all!" Martha replied, giving him a warm smile.
"Ah! Mickey The Mouse! Always glad to have you along!" Jack flashed his signature grin, "We're headed to the nearest bar."
"Shouldn't Martha be getting back to her mum and you to TorchWood?"
"Probably. But we figured we deserve a break. Plus, Ianto won't mind if I hang around a bit." He gave Mickey a not-so-subtle wink.
Martha rolled her eyes, "I called Mum and she said she'll be fine."
Mickey nodded assent, "Well, I've got nothing against a good bar."
The three walked the rest of the way in companionable silence. Mickey kept finding himself glancing over at the woman beside him. She really was very beautiful. And, from what he'd seen, witty, and bold, and clever. With a shake of his head he shook it off. He had only just met her!
The moment they walked through the bar door Jack led them over to the counter. He caught the eye of the bartender, a pretty girl in her early twenties, and beckoned her over. The three made their orders and when the girl brought them over, Jack, leaning against the counter, gave her a flirtatious smile.
"Hello gorgeous. My name's Captain Jack Harkness. And what's yours?"
Grabbing his arm, Martha pulled him away from the counter, throwing a hasty apology to the bartender over her shoulder. Mickey thanked the girl and took their drinks, following the two over to the other end of the bar.
He sat in the empty chair between them. Martha had an exasperated look on her face and Jack was pouting, refusing to speak to Martha. After a few minutes of awkward silence Mickey cleared his throat, "So, Martha, how did you meet The Doctor?"
She smiled a little wistfully, "I was training to be a doctor myself. He showed up at the hospital right before it got taken up to the moon by alien rhinos called The Judoon, saved us all from a Plasmavore and got us safely back to earth. I traveled with him for about year after that."
Mickey couldn't help grinning, "It's always something insane like that."
Martha laughed, a quite pretty sound Mickey thought, "He does like to make a entrance."
(As she spoke, Jack quietly slipped off his chair without them noticing and headed over to where the female bartender was working)
"Absolutely." he noticed a sad look come over her eyes as she looked down at the floor, "Hey, what's wrong?"
She sighed, "Sorry, it's just... While we were traveling... I fell in love with him. But he was still too smitten with Rose to even notice me. That's one of the reasons I left in the end, to get over him. And I broke up with my fiancé, a while back, so seeing him so happy with Rose again today... I know it's selfish, but it hurts."
Mickey gently took her hand in his, "I exactly know how you feel."
She looked up at his, surprised, "You do?"
"I was dating Rose before she began traveling with The Doctor. And, well, she was as smitten with him as he is with her. You can imagine how that affected me, my girlfriend running off with another man and leaving me behind like trash. Yeah, it hurt."
"I'm so sorry," Martha squeezed his hand.
"It's okay," he smiled, "I traveled with him for a while after that. Spent a while in an alternate universe... It still hurts a bit but I've moved on."
"How long did it take?"
"To move on? I dunno. It's a process. You take it one step at a time. One day at a time. Until you wake up one morning and you're alright."
A tear slipped silently down Martha's cheek but she quickly wiped it away. "I'm sorry."
"Don't be."
Just then Martha noticed Jack was missing. Smiling slightly despite herself she groaned. "Uh-oh,"
"What?"
"It's Jack. He's gone."
Taking a quick look around the room, Mickey spotted him with the barmaid, clearly flirting. He pointed, "There he is."
Martha groaned again, "Of course he would be."
After quickly finishing their drinks and paying for all three, the two, still hand-in-hand, walked over and dragged Jack away from the girl. Then the three walked to TorchWood where Jack left them. Martha and Mickey continued on to her house. At the door they hesitated.
"You have a place to stay?" Martha asked.
Mickey shrugged, "I'll crash at my cousin's."
Martha nodded, "Alright then. I guess this is goodbye."
"For now." He smiled at her, "Give me your number and I'll call you sometime."
Martha pulled a piece of paper and a pen out of her pocket and quickly jotted it down, holding it out to him. He took it and briefly glanced down at the digits written in small, neat handwriting then shoved it in his pocket.
"Alright then," he said "Goodbye,"She nodded but didn't look like she was about to leave anytime soon. She looked awkward, as if she wanted to touch him but wasn't sure how he'd take it. Seeing her indecision Mickey pulled her into a hug. She smiled slightly, fingers lightly resting on his shoulders. "Thank you." She whispered, "For everything."
"Anytime, Martha Jones." He pulled back grinning, "Have a great day."
"You too!"
And with that, she entered her house, closing the door behind her.
