"Hey everyone!" Dave roared into the microphone. "We've got a birthday tonight! Yeah! Let's bring out our good friend and bus keeper Mary!"
Mary walked out on stage in front of thousands of people, blushing. Dave and I hugged her.
"How does it feel to officially be an adult?!" Dave screamed.
"It feels fuckin rad!" Mary shouted into the microphone. The crowed roared.
"Alright, now Eddie asked us to do this song for you tonight! So, here it goes!"
As soon as Dave finished, I blasted into the intro of "Helter Skelter" one of Mary's favorite songs. She beamed and even helped sing along with Dave. Before the show, I knew Mary would want to do Ringo's famous line, "I got blisters on me fingers!" And I told Al to give her the signal.
Before the part, Al yelled into the microphone, "Make Ringo proud, Mary!"
Mary beamed and yelled into my microphone, "I GOT BLISTERS ON ME FINGERS!" And it ended. Mary walked off stage and we finished up our show.
After the show, Mary ran up to me and wrapped me in a hug. I threw my arms around her. Her hair smelled like coconuts.
"Eddie you are the sweetest! Thank you." She looked into my eyes with her beautiful blue ones.
"You're welcome. I just wanted to do something special. That's why I had Sam keep you busy when we rehearsed." Sam was one of the stage technicians.
She giggled. "Oh it all makes since now."
"Hey, I've got one more thing for you." I grabbed her hand and we walked back to the tour bus.
"Okay, close your eyes." I said. Mary closed them and I put her present in her hands.
"Open."
She opened her eyes and gasped. "Awe, how cute!" She squealed at the George Harrison plush doll I found in Buffalo.
"Here's something else." I handed her a Led Zeppelin album. I knew she was fond of them too.
"Eddie, this is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me. Ya know, for the most part, my life has been shit. My mom moved away when I was 8 after her and my dad divorced. And then my dad married my bitch step mom a year later. It was really hard to cope with my mom leaving, and only getting phone calls from her. But then when the thing moved in, it just made life worse. First it was mental abuse; telling me I was too ugly to ever get a boyfriend, that my mom left because of me, things like that. Then when I was about 11, it was physical too. Only when my dad wasn't around. She'd hit me with pans sometimes. Or push me. I could never tell my dad. Whenever I'd complain about her, he'd tell me to shut up. At least he wasn't abusive, just oblivious and in denial. I think somewhere deep down he knows how much of a monster she is. Anyways, I'd never get birthday parties or anything after mom left, so this is so nice of you."
I put my hand on her knee. "I'm glad I could make it special for you, Mary. I really care about you."
I looked into her eyes. It was quiet in the tour bus. And then, I leaned toward her, and I kissed her. I was hoping this would happen. Her lips were soft and she kissed me back, thankfully. She wrapped her arms around my neck, and I placed my hands on her waist. She was so small, so soft, so delicate. I just wanted to give her everything. She deserved everything good.
We ended the kiss, and she leaned her head into my chest. We said nothing for a while. I just held her as we looked out at the night sky from the small bus window.
