                         {Third person POV}
"Hello Mary, I'm Dr. Samuels. How are you today?"
Mary crossed her arms reluctantly and looked down at her thin legs under the white hospital blanket.
"Fine." She muttered. She glanced back up at Dr. Samuels, who studied her with his dark brown eyes. He was a tall, thin man in his late 30s. He had dirty blonde hair and a full mustache. His soft smile put Mary at a little more ease, but she was still upset with Eddie for making her talk with this guy.
Dr. Samuels shifted in his seat. He got his notepad out. "Alright Mary, are you ready to begin?"
Mary rolled her blue eyes subtly. "Not really. I'm not keen on talking about my feelings." Again, she flashed her eyes to get a quick glimpse of the calm doctor.
"I understand. A lot of people do not care for opening up. Let's start with something easy. Can I try that?"
"It depends on what you consider easy."
"What is your favorite color?"
Mary looked at him straight in the eyes. "Seriously?"
"Well, it's an icebreaker. It's like the first day of school when the teacher has you get into a group and all of you ask generic questions so that eventually you can grow a bond to be more open. It's a simple tactic that can work if you just give it a shot. So, what is your favorite color?"
Mary sighed. "Fine. It's blue."
"So is mine."
"Is it really, or is that a scheme to try and make me trust you so you can get into my head and tell me how I should feel?"
Dr. Samuels chuckled at Mary. "'My, my aren't we hostile. No, I'm serious. And throughout this whole experience, I will never try to tell you how to feel. My job is to listen to how you feel and help you cope with your feelings; not make you a mindless zombie that depends on anti-depressants and Budweiser."
Mary studied him, like how she studied everyone.
"Okay, next question."
"Do you have any siblings?"
"Yes, I have an older brother. He is staying at the hospital with me."
"Oh, is he the tall one with the brown hair that walked out as I was coming in?"
"Yeah, that's him."
"Are you two close?"
"We used to be. But then when he left home and basically left me behind to deal with our horrid stepmom by myself, I stopped talking to him. I guess I held a selfish grudge because I didn't want to do it alone; even though I should've been happy that he could leave."
"It's not selfish. You felt scared and upset that your brother couldn't see that. You wanted someone else to endure so that you could relate to someone. It's common."
"Yeah...I guess. I'm glad I'm not mad at him anymore. I forgot how much fun we have together."
"That's good. Another question. Are you in a relationship?"
Mary was surprised that Dr. Samuels didn't know that Ed was the mastermind behind this appointment.
"Uh, y-yeah. His name is Eddie. Eddie Van Halen. He's a guitar player."
"Oh yes, for that new band Van Halen?"
"Yep, that's the one."
"How is it dating a touring musician? I heard it is hard to keep a relationship like that at bay."
"Well, I was on tour with them. In fact, the story of how I met them is a bit funny. You see, I ran away from home after my stepmom hit me and screamed at me. I couldn't do it anymore. As I was walking down a highway, I was in the middle of the road and I didn't see the bus coming. I jumped out of the way and the driver stopped the bus. It was Alex, Eddie's brother, who's the drummer in the band. They offered to take me home, but I refused. Instead, I brought up the idea to be a bus maid for them. They caved, and in a month or two, Ed and I decided to date. We got really close and he helped me through a lot. And still is. He's a great guy. I'm really lucky to be with him."
"Sounds like he is. You mentioned your stepmother screaming and hitting you? Are you comfortable talking about that today?"
Mary shifted uncomfortably in her bed. Is she ready to talk about her stepmom to a stranger yet? Someone who has power to say something to authority? She may hate the woman, but she didn't want her to get involved. She just wanted to move on.
"N-No. Not yet. Soon, though. It's a touchy subject."
"That's fine. Let's speak more about the tour you went on."
So for the next 20 minutes Mary and the Doctor spoke about the experience of the tour, minus the Erik situation. That would be another time.
"Well Mary, I think we made good conversation today. I hope when I come back in two days you'll be ready for a more open experience."
As the Doctor walked out, Mary leaned back in her bed and heaved a sigh. All she wanted was to be in her and Ed's bunk, eating chips and not giving a damn about her past.
