Sunlight filtered into the room through small slits in the blinds, waking Enrique up from a light sleep. The night before had been pretty eventful and arguably the best night of his life.
He felt a small movement from beside him and stilled, not wanting to wake her from her peaceful sleep. He watched as her chest softly rose and fell, how her hair lay on her pillow messily. He raked his fingers through his hair, failing to fathom her beauty. Slowly, attempting not to wake her in the process, he lifted his hand to move a stray clump of dark hair from her flushed face.
Enrique knew that what they did was wrong - what he did was wrong; selfishly taking advantage of a drunken Valentina to satiate his carnal desire. But the thing that bothered him most was that he didn't care. He despised Andre for the way he treated Valentina and resented the fact that she probably wouldn't leave him.
At around the age of nine Enrique had a crush on Valentina. Even at a young age, she had a vibrancy that he couldn't help but be drawn to, even after the day she almost beat him up for decapitating one of her dolls. The memory brought a smile to his face, which very quickly fell as he knew that his happiness would be short-lived.
Enrique sighed and carefully rose from the bed. He was in need of a cigarette. He left the room quietly and made his way downstairs, having to overcome the obstacles that were the passed out bodies sprawled across the floor. Amidst all the rubbish Enrique found his jacket and retrieved a packet of cigarettes and a lighter from his pocket, after which he stepped out onto the porch.
As he took a puff of his cigarette he couldn't help but wonder if he would ever be content in his life. Maybe one day he'd learn not to be so selfish. Maybe one day he'd learn to keep a relationship without ruining it with his stupid actions. Maybe one day he'd wake up without the self-loathing that gnawed at him each and every single day. Maybe. But nothing is ever for certain.
