London, England 1892

Leo frowned as he watched his cousin with weary eyes. He had grown up around Alexander, played with him, slept with after days of playing in the sun together and even seen him before he reached of age. The same went for all of his cousins and yet no matter how much alike they all were, Alexander was inherently different. Beneath his handsome face and quiet, calm demeanor was a scoundrel if there ever were one. He was a mixture of their uncle, Andrew, and their grandfather, Adam, all rolled into one.

Some thought he did not talk merely because he was shy but any member of Hugh family would gladly say otherwise.

Some thought his piercing green eyes, one of the only Hugh's to inherit their grandfather's cat like eyes, were mystical but in all honesty he was constantly roaming, scanning.

It was rather frightening how woman seemed to fall over him without his even trying and yet it also came as no surprise. Leo scratched at the stubble growing on his chin as he continued to watch Alexander.

Alexander suddenly smirked and Leo sighed, he knew he was caught.

"Am I fascinating, Leo? Have you taken enough notes?" Alexander asked, his voice a deep rumble. He turned to look at Leo, his long brown-black curly locks falling over his shoulder. Leo frowned, even his movements were reminiscent of their grandfather.

"You're evil, you know that?" Leo mumbled as he shook his head.

Alexander's smirk turned into a full blown grin and he shrugged before his eyes fell back on the crowd of eligible women before them.

They were attending a ball, the usual. They were constantly bombarded with invitation after invitation, the Hugh family name only growing more popular by the day. Their grandfather's shipping company had basically grown legs over the past twenty years, revenue pouring in and not to mention that the family was filled with a rainbow of happily married couples ranging from royalty to thieves to ex-pirates.

The fact that the Hugh family tree was filled with mulatto offspring didn't even seem to faze most people anymore.

"How, do tell, am I evil?" Alexander asked, running a hand through his hair as his eyes fell upon one women before scanning over the next. He was obviously searching for his next sexual conquest. He took them as they came and never seemed to feel bad about it.

Leo tsked, "You should look for women who aren't virgins."

Alexander threw his head back and laughed, "God, this is why I love you, dear cousin. You're so kind. So sweet...so trustworthy."

Leo couldn't help the smile that broke out on his lips. He hated when Alexander did that...complimented him as if he were the purest man on earth and yet he couldn't deny that his words were true.

"Besides, I never approach any of them. They all come flocking to me and offering themselves on silver platters. How am I evil for taking what was offered? Even a demon must eat."

Leo sputtered before chuckling, crossing his arms over his chest as he leaned against the wall, "See...my point exactly. You're evil."

"I won't deny your accusation, I'm sure there are many that would agree." Alexander stopped talking, his eyes suddenly landed on one women, his green cat like eyes moving up and down her body.

Leo noticed and grimaced, "Oh, dear Lord. Alex don't you dare...," he snapped as his eyes landed on the source of his cousins staring, "You can't have her." He recognized that look, the moment Alexander locked down on a target. And the woman in question was most definitely not to be toyed with.

Alexander turned so fast it was a wonder he didn't develop whiplash. He raised a brow, "Why? Is she married?"

"Well...no."

"Engaged?"

Leo coughed, "No."

"Then what's stopping me?" Alexander asked curiously.

Leo sighed, rubbing his eyes, suddenly feeling tired beyond belief, "She's a countess."

Alexander scoffed, chuckling as if Leo had said something extremely funny. He laughed for so long that people began to glance in their direction. "I'm a Hugh."

Leo opened his mouth to protest but couldn't. He smiled before laughing as well, unable to do much else. If there was one thing they had learned from their grandparents, it was that nothing could deter a Hugh when he wanted something. "You're the worst, really you are but I can't even argue with that statement."

Alexander said nothing, retorting with his trademark silence much like his father, Aiden. "If it will put your heart at ease a little I won't make the first move."

"You never do."

"I won't sleep with her...unless she offers," Alexander countered.

Leo grinned, "They always do."

"I can promise you I won't get her pregnant."

Leo coughed, choking on the deep breath he sucked in. "Good God...Alex...where's your human decency?"

Alexander tsked, turning his eyes to his cousins for a split second before turning back to look across the room, "I have some but right now...my libido is a little louder."

"You're just awful."

"You'll understand when you finally get a woman in bed. And don't give me the excuse that none of them are calling for you, that just isn't true. You're just too much of a sweet heart to string any of them along without the promise of marriage."

Leo blushed furiously, his tan skin turning slightly pink. "This isn't about me!"

A short, plump, adorable girl walked over to them, halting their conversation, "May I have a dance, Mr. Hugh." She asked, her eyes directed at Leo. Before Leo could answer Alexander ruffled his hair, "Of course he'll dance with you. Go on, Leo."

Leo swatted his hands away, smiling at the girl before him and mumbling under his breath as he was dragged away, "Don't treat me like a child, damn it, I'm older than you Alex!" Only by a year.

Alexander merely smiled, his eyes locked across the room on the women who had managed to snag his attention...at least for tonight.
