"She's remembering every time she thought no one was there. It is always hard for humans." He said, looking sadly at her.
"It not have been so hard if you had been a little warmer to her." Adrian settled back the couch.
"I can't be. May would know."

•••while December was with Freya•••
"Come on while she's getting the first aide." Adrian pulled me into a room to the side of the dining room.
My shoulders slumped and my mask fell.
"It hurts, shifter. I can't keep being so closed off." I said, leaning against a wall and running my hand through my hair.
"I know, bro. But if what you said is true than it is for her own safety." He leaned on the wall next to me.
"When I tell her about her being watched always......."
"What does that mean?"
"You'll see. Ugh!! Why did he have to choose a hunter?? Why me? Why not one of the millions at his disposal?" I slid down to the floor.
"I don't know, man." Adrian offered a hand and pulled me up, after sitting next to me in silence for a few minutes."We should get back."
We walked back into the dining room and December looked up.
"That was fast." Adrian said walking into the dining room.
I nodded in approval at the gauze. Not many humans would know what to do. December rolled her eyes.
She tapped her wrist then held up her hands. One had her fingers splayed, thumb bent, the other had her showed her middle finger, making the number 14 while flipping us off at the same time.
Adrian choked on laughter. "Feisty!!"
I picked up Freya and laid her down on the couch.
December wrote on the chalkboard on the wall. "Explanation time."
Adrian and I looked at each other before settling in around the room.
Adrian sat on the couch with Freya's head in his lap. He played with her hair, avoiding December's cold eyes.
I sat on a beige loveseat and December sat next to me. I could feel her hip against mine.
I stiffened. She smiled, leaning into my shoulder. I stood up and sat in the white recliner that was opposite of the loveseat.
•••".....May would know."•••
"How would May know?" Adrian looked utterly confused.
"She would be able to sense my change in mood. She is the head of her division." I leaned back and closed my eyes.
"Really? A nap? Now?" He said, raising an eyebrow.
"No, vampires barely need to sleep. I'm trying to detect May's presence."
"What does that mean?"
I opened an eye. "How much do you know about vampires?"
"A lot. All that holy water, silver, crosses, stakes, most of you don't like sun....."
I doubled over laughing. "You.....know......nothing!" I gasped out.
"Hey! That's not my fault! I try to avoid you guys!"
"Okay, first of all, it isn't silver that hurts us. Holy water and crosses are something we told people that hurts but it has no effect on us. Stakes immobilize us but they don't kill us. The sun doesn't hurt vampires unless they're hunters."
"What's a hunter?"
"I'm a hunter. We track down, kill, kidnap.........watch occasionally, in exchange for what we want."
"What do you get out of watching her?"
"Peace." I shrugged.
"Again, meaning?"
"Another curse of being a hunter, very few things can kill us. Those few things are rare and hard to find. Master has all of them and I can choose what to use."
Adrian gawped at me, wide eyed. "So basically, by watching her, you can commit suicide?"
"Yes."
