It was around 5 in the morning when I woke up. Tiffany lay beside me, still asleep. I smile and dug my head into her hair. The sweet smell of lavender in a morning park after a light rain. Her perfect blond hair covered her face, hiding her wide blue eyes.
She wakes up and gives me a light peck on my cheek. I've never felt so good in such a long time. I just want to hide under the covers all day. Giving her all of what I have. Showing me every part of her body she could. I wanted to give her my heart.
But I had work to do.
"I'll see you tonight babe," I said as she pulled my tie pulling me closer to her. She was only wearing my shirt and her underwear at this point.
"Don't be late, I have a great surprise for you tonight. It's your birthday. Smile a little," Tiffany winked as I left the apartment. It was my 27th birthday and I had to spend the day in my job trying to get a living. I was rich, born rich. Had a family that was successful in business. Had an older brother who took over that family business. I had me to start my own life and make my own money. But I had everything going right for me ever since I graduated from Yale. I now work as a shrink who help others with their depressing lives. It may not sound like fun, but honestly I have plenty of my own wisdom to give.
Today's client list was a bit short but the slots were all booked. The first was Mark. He had to face a lot ever since his parents got a divorce when he was 5. Mark suffers a lot from his problems but like the rest, he was a pretty normal enough kid. He came early as usual to the office I work at. I opened the doors for him and ushered him to the room.
"So Mark, how are you coping with that dietary recommendations I gave you?"
"Fine."
"Are you taking the proper medications for your cold?"
"Yea."
"How's Sparky?"
"Better."
"Your mom?"
"Great."
"Are you doing alright there, Mark?"
"Super."
"Well, then, you seem to be in great shape. What do you want to come talk about, kid?"
"It's Grace. She, -err, she-"
"Take your time."
He started crying.
"She broke up with me last night. On the phone. 'Said she was pregnant. 'Said her dad knew and beat the shit out of her. 'Said I couldn't get near her ever again. 'Said I should mind my own business. I told her we'd get through this together, that I loved her and would do anything for her. But she didn't give a shit. She's getting an abortion."
"This story sound familiar to you Mark?"
"Yea, it sounded like what happened to my dad. Lucky kid. He didn't have to live with his dad. He didn't have to live with all of this cruelty. He didn't have to live my life."
"Indeed. But it's better to be living, you know. You could do so many more things. Enjoy the good parts and cry over the bad. In the end we'll all be dead and we would've want to live to our full potential."
"But, Sir, I learnt in the book I borrowed from your shelf 6 years ago that you can't live without love. It was simple enough to understand."
I thought about it for a while.
"Oh! That book. I guess I must've thrown that away. It's pretty bullshit, that book. I thought I couldn't live without love but it really lies on moving on. Between us guys, it's always about finding the next person to hold at night."
"Well, sir, I may be only 17 but I know very well that love does last between 2 people."
It ended there, pretty much. The memories just started flooding in my mind. And for once I thought about the love that I didn't have in me any more.
And it scared me.
