IT WAS ON HIS BIRTHDAY WHEN his father left their family, and with it, their trust.

There were no balloons. His mother had forgot to buy the cake. Not even a gift or a birthday dinner.

Jason was turning Four.

He wished it hadn't felt so much like it was yesterday. He wish he could have forgotten everything about his father but it wasn't simple. And he was lucky to not have went through as much pain as his sister because she was older and more understanding of the situation and what was happening unlike Jason.

They grabbed out a board game from under Thalia's bed to play with, the word monopoly printed on the front cover. Jason had always enjoyed the game since it felt good to earn all the money and buy lands and own states. He knew his sister enjoyed the game too. Even though it was his birthday and he hadn't gotten the birthday he had looked for, maybe this was close as enough as he had wished. His sister was snaking the dices with both her hands as it rolled to the ground when they heard a crash coming from the front door of the house.

Jason's eyes widened with happenings hoping that it meant his father had finally come. He got up from the ground to run over to the apartment door, but his sister stopped him. Jason remembered how his sister's eyes widened as if she knew something he didn't. This was the first time in his life where his sister looked like she was going to break in tears. There were voice coming from outside their door, loud voices belonging to their mother and father.

"Thalia what's wrong." He had asked her.

"Just be quiet Jason." She said sternly, keeping in eye on their closed door.

"I want to know-"

"No you don't!" Thalia shouted. Jason watched her, his mouth opened wide as Thalia noticed her mistake.

"I'm sorry Jason."as a small whimper came out of her mouth as her hands started to shake.

Then, he heard cries coming from his mother's mouth outside the room. Jason stood still as his sister cleaned up the mess of monopoly cash and and put the board game back in its place. He stared hopelessly at the row of small little red houses wondering what would happen to his own home. A little after that, the house became quiet except for a few sniffles until them two could not be heard.

This had happened countless of times before. Their parents had been fighting more frequently than usual and his mother had been spending more time at her work in the bar than at home. He was still young then and still couldn't understand the situation and what was happening. After he got older, the arguments made more sense and the nights when his dad weren't here were clearer.

Someone opened the door of their bedroom, both of his two children on the ground as the man entered the room. His hair was brushed back and groomed and his startling, blue eyes seemed panicked and tense. Everyone had told him the striking similarities between and Jason and his father but no, they were nothing alike besides their facial features.

His father was an awful man. Jason's ears didn't go unheard from the whispers at the grocery shop as he went in with him and his sister. Their father was a scoundrel, tramp, and a cheat. The words meant nothing to his vocabulary but he knew it meant something bad by the way it sounded as it went out their mouth as if they had tasted something bad and wanted to get rid of it.

Jason couldn't help but notice a scratch on his cheek that could have only been made by someone's sharp nails. He also couldn't help but notice no cross of sympathy on his face. Jason looked from afar behind his father where his mother laid helplessly resting in the couch asleep as if she couldn't take it anymore.

"I have to leave." His father had told Thalia and Jason. He was was only a young boy then, so he wasn't clear at all what was happening. Thalia didn't bother to even stop him. She stared at him, a hard and stern look on her face, already trying to clear their father's face from her mind.

"But it's my birthday," He whined.

Jason didn't know why but he started crying . The man who once had been his father took up into his shoulders and cradled him like a baby. He wiped Jason's tears as they fell down his cheek kissing the top of Jason's head. For a moment, he forgot that his father was leaving until the arms wrapped around him became less familiar as the seconds passed by. Jason didn't want to let go so his father had done it for him, putting Jason into his sister's arms as he left the room.

"It's only for the best, children." His father had last said to the both of them. "I was never meant to be a father."
