C H A P T E R FOURTEENACROSS THE STREET FROM THE SCHOOL, there was a man there looking at him. His figure was standing aside from a tree that towered above his tall demure. Jason couldn't help as a thought struck that if the man were to hurt him, he would do a good job of that. He hoped that wasn't his attention.
The man - Jason didn't know how - seemed familiar somehow but Jason couldn't remember where he had seen him. Instead of meeting his gaze, Jason looked away and towards the yellow and black colored vehicle that strolled on four wheels and stopped the school's street where kids stumbled out of the doors to their buses. Jason didn't go with them. His hands were in his pockets as he tried to ignore the girls passing by him as they giggled at him. Jason wondered whether or not he had something on his face. He wiped his cheek with his finger and immediately stopped as he spotted Piper coming out of the school with her backpack on her shoulder.
She seemed to notice him as her face lifted when she turned her head to his direction.
"Hey, Jason!" Piper shouted, waving at him.
Jason turned around to the man with the suit but he was no longer there. He shook his head, trying to shake the uneasy feeling that came with him and went over to her. She had seated herself on a bench as Jason sat down next to her.
"So, excited for the party tonight?" Piper shuffled her feet raising in eyebrow at his direction.
"Yeah, I guess. To be truthful, my sister would have also killed me if I didn't go because she's so committed to her popularity and she says I'm embarrassing to her for acting like a geek. She's kinda of right since what I was planning to do instead of going." He rubbed the back of his neck.
Piper laughed. "Hey, you're not a geek. Okay, maybe you are but everyone is a geek for something."
"Thanks for making me feel better," He said, sarcastically. "Hey, the party's at Chandler Plaza Hotel, right?"
"The one and only." She answered.
"You know, I heard there's going to be a ton of food there. Like a humongous cake and a ton of candy."
"Are they going to stuff us with food or something and then kill us?" Jason could already see the headlines. He put his hand down on the bench as casual as possible. "WITCH MURDERS TWO CHILDREN, AGED 17 AND 18 HANSEL AND GRETEL AT CHANDLER PLAZA HOTEL. It'll be in the newspaper for a week. And the only evidence they'll find is two half eaten a cupcake."
"Who's the witch?" Piper asked, already knowing the answer to that.
Someone passed by them, her black hair behind her back and her nails polished black like her core. Drew glared at their direction and stalked off.
"The one and only," He whispered into her ear as Piper laughed.
"You've got some crazy imagination right there," Piper admitted.
Yeah, maybe he did have a crazy imagination. He could have just thought all that up about the guy over there who looked like he wanted to kill him. Jason cleared his thoughts and put his attention back to Piper who's hair flew across her face and her eyes were bluer out in the sun.
"So, were you thinking of doing instead of going to the party so I can know what you're missing?" She asked, tilting her head.
"I have Latin homework due next week so I was going to work on that." Then, he trailed off. "And practice my math."
Piper stared at him for a moment as Jason wondered if he said something wrong. "Hey, can you help me with my math?"
"Really?" Jason smiled. "Are you sure? I don't, it just seemed like yesterday you didn't need any math help."
