Rosie
I sat in the booth at Starbucks, tears endlessly running down my face. Why would he do that? I just. I can’t even comprehend why he’d do that. What did I do wrong? Was I not good enough? I picked at my bagel, not really wanting to eat, or anything really. I just. I want to go home. But I can’t. I can’t go back there. Not after what he did. Some movement catches my eye and I look up to see a guy with black hair sit across from me, his blue eyes shining in the low light, some swing music playing from the girl up on stage.
“What do you want?” I sniffled, using the sleeve of my purple sweater to rub at the tear tracks down my eyes, adjusting my glasses a little. He looked at me for a moment, biting his lip.
“Do you want to go somewhere?”
I was about to decline when my phone started ringing in my pocket. I looked at the screen and saw his name flash across it, Vince. I looked back up at the man and nodded, wanting some sort of a distraction. My only hope, really, was that I wouldn’t get kidnapped or anything. I nodded and got up, tears still pushing their way down my face.
The boy gently placed his hand on my lower back, barely touching me as he led me out of Starbucks, rain pounding the ground. We stopped just at the edge of the building, where the small covering stopped. I looked ahead at the rain that fell, not really wanting to get drenched, but seeing no way around it. The boy shed his jacket, making me look at him in concern.
“Well, you don’t want to get all wet, do you?” He asked, draping the jacket over my head as a makeshift umbrella. I used my hands to hold the jacket out of my eyes and gave him a small smile, I don’t even know his name.
“Let’s go!” I giggled, taking off down the road, rain pelting the fabric that shielded me from the rain.
“Wait up!” I turned around, smiling at the man as he jogged up to me. Together we ran through the rain for a couple blocks before stopping outside of an ice cream shop. “After you.” The man smiled, holding The door open for me.
I took his jacket off of my head and handed it back to him, looking around the little shop. It was very old-school looking with black and white tiled floors and red booths. He held his jacket in one hand and took my hand with the other, giving me a smile when I looked up at him.
“I’m Phil, by the way.” He smiled, stepping up to the counter.
“Rosie.” I said quietly, tucking a piece of my brown hair behind my ear.
We ordered our ice creams and then sat down in a booth, some upbeat music playing throughout the store.
“So are you okay?” Phil asked after a moment, taking a bite of his chocolate ice cream, giving himself a little mustache.
“I think so.” I said softly, licking my strawberry ice cream, “I’m better.” I added with a smile. Definitely better.
Phil smiled wide, a spark in his crystal blue eyes, “I’m glad.” He said, and I knew he meant it.
He barely even knew me and he cared for how I felt, which is more than I can say for Vince. I pushed him to the back of my mind and laughed at Phil as he tried to lick off his choco-mustache.
He stopped for a second and looked at me for a second, “You have a wonderful laugh…” He whispered, almost in awe.
I bit my lip and giggled a little, “Thanks…”
“What do you want to do now?” He asked, sitting up a little straighter and looking fairly excited.
I couldn’t help but smile, “I don’t know.” I said, my smile growing wider as he thought hard. I couldn’t get over the fact that he actually cared. I don’t even know him!
