I shrugged on my Totoro backpack and ran a hand through my short brown hair. I always hated flights like these. They make me freak out, I mean—do you know how many things could go wrong on a ten hour flight? Many, many things.
I squinted against the bright lights of the airport and went over to the baggage claim, glad that I had some pills to help me sleep during the flight. I easily slid through the people who were crowded around it and stood at the front. While I waited for my suitcase to make it around the moving belt I checked my phone and nodded when I saw it was 10 a.m. Perfect time to start the day. I saw my red suitcase move along the conveyer belt and quickly grabbed it, pulling it on its wheels behind me as I made it through the airport. Dan better be here. He’s always late, though! I dragged the case out of the doors and shivered in the cold air.
“C’mon, Daaan, Dan. D-D-Dan, Dan, Dan.” I softly sang, shifting my feet back and forth, “Any day now.” I told him to be here at 10, I told him. I checked my phone some time later and saw that it was almost 11. Really? I sighed and sat on the curve, my legs aching from staying in one place as I watched everyone else leave in either a cab, with a family member, or on a bus.
“I should’ve just taken a bus.” I sighed, tapping my foot on the pavement.
“No, no, no, you shouldn’t have!” I looked up and saw Dan walking towards me—A black leather jacket on over a white tank top along with black skinny jeans and his usual white sneakers, “I got here! I might be a little lat—”
“A little?” I stood up and tried to be angry, though a smile crept onto my face at the sight of him. I’ve missed him so much this past month, visiting the parents and all. “I’ve been sitting here for about an hour!” I wrapped my arms around him in a hug and spotted Phil jogging up behind us, a green checkered shirt on.
“I tried to wake him up! I really did.” He defended, completely throwing Dan under the bus. I smiled and gave him a hug too.
“That’s awesome, Phil…” Dan muttered, rolling his eyes as he hefted up my suitcase, “Jesus fucking Christ, what do you have in here? Bowling balls?”
“Yes, Dan. I visit America and the thing I bring back is bowling balls.” I said sarcastically with a smile, adjusting my blue hoodie. We joked on like this until we get to Phil’s car—one he was completely against buying (for money reasons) but did so anyway because he started volunteering at a middle school across town—helping with their video production class.
“So, are we still on for Pj’s Halloween party tonight?” Dan asked, looking back at me from the front passengers’ seat. I smiled and nodded excitedly, I was going as Emily from The Corpse Bride and Dan was going to go as Victor Van Dort.
“Definitely!”
“Now I have no one to coordinate with!” Phil sighed, giving us a puppy dog look in the rear view mirror. I laughed at that and sat forward, ruffling his hair,
“Why don’t you figure something out with that girlie-friend of yours?” He blushed a little and looked back at the road, a smile on his face.
“She can’t come to Pj’s party tonight—she’s babysitting our neighbors’ son.” I made an ‘oh’ sound and sat back, trying to think… What to do for Phil…
“You could be Thor?” I suggested with a cheeky smile. Dan let out a short laugh and looked out the window, trying to hide his smile.
“Hey! I’m pretty much already like Thor!” He defended, taking one hand off of the wheel (making me a bit nervous) and flexing, “See? Look at that! That is all muscle.”
