I held on to the steering wheel with one hand as I wrestled the window up, turning the lever furiously.
“Pile of junk…” I muttered, the cold winter air blowing my hair back. I kept my eyes glued on the road until I heard a rough crack! making me jump a little. I looked down and saw that the lever gave way, the thing in my hand, now in front of my face.
“Dang it!” I yelled, glancing at the hole in the door. I looked back up and screamed as a man walked in front of my car, headphones in his ears and nose in a book. I slammed on the brakes and skidded across the icy street, everything happening fast. Next thing I knew the car stopped and the man was fifteen feet in front of me, sprawled out in the thin layer of snow.
“Oh gosh…” I whispered, pulling the key out of the ignition and kicking the door open [it never really closed all the way]. I hopped out and pushed through the crowd of people that were now surrounding him.
“Hello?” I asked, shaking him a little as I dropped down next to him. I put my head to his chest, his heart beat was steady and I let out a sigh of relief.
“Oh, thank you…” I murmured, looking at the man’s face. There was a little bit of red blood on his hairline, making his dark curls stick to his forehead. Thick lashes lined his eyes as they remained closed, his breathing steady as well.
“Is he okay?” Someone asked behind me.
“I think so…” Tears pricked the back of my eyes as I leaned back, my jeans getting wet in the snow. I could’ve killed him. I could’ve killed someone. As much as I wanted to blame my cruddy car I couldn’t, knowing that I should’ve paid more attention.
The man moaned and I leaned forward again, “Hello? Are you okay?” I asked, my face over his. His eyes fluttered open and electric green orbs looked back at me, awe swirling in the color.
“Uhhh… Yeah… I think so…” He muttered, reaching up to touch his head before wincing, “My head hurts.”
“I am so sorry… I was trying to roll up my window and then the thingy broke and I have no idea what happened—” I was cut off when a couple of paramedics shoved passed me, placing a transport gurney next to him. I fell back into the snow on my bum, shivers running through my body. The paramedics started grabbing at the man but he fought back, sitting up on his own.
“Oi… Get off. I’m fine.” He mumbled, swatting their hands away.
“Sir, we need to take you to the hospital to make sure you’re okay.” One of them said, gripping his arm tightly.
He looked a little confused for a moment and shook his head, “Then I can go to the hospital on my own. I don’t need to get into an ambulance. I’m not dying.” He pulled out of their grip and stood up, me immediately going to my feet to steady him. I wrapped my arm behind his back and his went around my shoulders as he wobbled. Despite the situation I couldn’t help but envy how plushy his sweater was, me sinking right into it, our bodies molding together.
The paramedics couldn’t force him to go to the hospital and they knew it, giving him a stern look before walking away.
“I can take you to the hospital…” I offered as the crowd around us dispersed, knowing that I owed him at least that. He rolled his eyes and shook his head, but then winced again, taking his free hand and rubbing his neck.
“I’m fine, I’m fine. If it gets any worse I’ll go, but I’m fine.” He looked mildly irritated. My face dropped and I felt bad for making him angry. I just keep on making this guy’s day worse, don’t I?
