By the second episode of the marathon, Brittney was already asleep and Melanie was in the bathroom. I heard my phone vibrate from the table beside me. It was Mason saying that he’s watching the Doctor Who marathon and was wondering if I was too. I snapped a photo of the TV with the Doctor and his companion in it, and sent it to him.
Melanie got out of the bathroom, and she had her solemn face on.
“Hey, we gotta talk.” She said seriously.
“Yes, we do. You’ve been keeping things from me lately.” I returned the somberness.
“In my defense, we haven’t had time to talk until right now.”
“Okay, so what else do I need to know other than the job application and your seeing Mason at La Prime.”
“You know about Mason?” she asked.
“I saw him earlier at Modesto’s when I went back to get my purse. And I’m texting him right now.”
“You left your purse there again? Sometimes I wonder if you do that on purpose.”
“Why would you say that?” I asked, confused by her statement.
“Because earlier was the fifth time you’ve left your purse there.”
“Oh. Well, I don’t do it purposely. I’m just not used to carrying purses.” I explained.
“Whatever floats your boat. So let’s go back to the topic,” she said.
“Yes, about Mason. I saw him earlier at the restaurant and we swapped numbers.”
“He was asking for it when we saw each other at La Prime, but I didn’t give it to him.” She said dryly.
“Why don’t you like the man? He’s nice, decent, and he informs people when he plans on moving away.” I said, slightly losing my temper.
“Karen, I am entitled to have my own opinion. I don’t like him and I’m sorry, but that won’t change. Just like your opinion on Arthur will never change.”
“They’re different, Melanie.”
“They definitely are. For one thing, Artie won’t change his career for a girl. Not even for me.”
“What do you mean?” she lost me.
“When I saw Mason at La Prime, we had time to talk. I thought I’d give him another chance since it’s been years and he might’ve changed. And you know the first thing he asked me?”
“What?”
“He asked: ‘So do you think Karen will give me a chance now that I’m a doctor?’” she stated with a tone of disgust.
“I’m sure he was just joking. He had told me about his interest in medicine when he was just a monitor tech.” I informed her.
“Joking or not, it wasn’t funny. I found it creepy. He thinks the only reason you like Tom is because he’s a doctor.”
“Correction: ‘liked’. And again, I’ve known Mason longer than you have and I get his jokes.”
“Fine. Whatever you say.”
“So what else haven’t you told me?”
“I think I’ve mentioned it earlier on the phone, but let me say it again. Tom is still in love with you.”
“Let me clear this up one more time. He never said he liked me, let alone be in love with me.” I raised my voice, annoyed by her pushiness.
She sighed as a sign of surrender. “I’m tired. Let’ just go to sleep.”
I turned the TV and lights off, and laid on the recliner for about an hour before I fell into deep sleep.
