"You called your relationship with him a 'thing'?" Melanie exclaimed.
"Well, yea..." I replied.
"It is sort of confusing if you ask me." Kris joined in.
"Thank you!" I said as I slip into my scrubs. We were having a Skype conference call while we were all getting ready for work on an early Monday morning.
"Didn't you say you're glad you're starting over?" Melanie asked.
"Yes, I did. Did it sound like I said I'm glad we're together now?" I asked, a bit confused.
"Not really. It just sounded like what it's supposed to sound. You did ask him to escort you to a wedding though." Kris said as he fixed his tie.
"That's a big deal?"
"Yes!" Kris and Melanie exclaimed.
"I thought it would be normal since you're also his friend." I told Melanie.
"Why are you so innocent when it comes to relationships?" Kris asked with a bit of frustration.
"He said yes, so I don't see what the big deal is!"
"Oh... he did? I thought he said he'd think about it." Mel said.
"Or 'I'll check my schedule, since I'm a doctor and doctors are very busy.'" Kris said, mocking Tom.
"Wow, I think it's only you two who are making a big deal out of this."
"He must really like you." Kris stated.
"I told you he does." Mel said.
We were all quiet for a moment, getting ready as well as thinking about what we just discussed.
"I really like him, you guys. Everything from before was just a misunderstanding. He's back, and I really feel like starting over is the right thing to do." I explained to them.
"If you really think so. I guess your heart and mind compromise has been voided. Heart wins!" Kris said, but I was sensing a bit of sarcasm that I just chose to ignore.
"What are you guys talking about? I was in the kitchen preparing my lunch." Mel asked.
"Oh nothing. Alright, I'll get going since it's already 7." Kris said.
"Me too." Mel and I said at the same time.
"TTYL!" Kris was the first one to hang up.
"Mel, is he alright?" I asked
"Who? Kris?"
"Yes. He seemed mad or something." I said.
"Oh, you noticed... Karen, you changed a lot when Tom left. You were cold and serious all the time. Kris was the one really affected by that, since he's closest to you. He lost his confidant, and we all thought we wouldn't get your old self back. I'm not sure if you noticed, but Kris was the one who worked the hardest to cheer you up. He even tried to look for Tom." Mel explained.
"What?!" I exclaimed.
"Yes, but since Tom went to an out-of-state university, it was hard for us to trace his old friends. The ones he had at Kaiser already left, since they already finished their residency. Anyways, what I'm trying to say is that I think Kris is worried that we would lose you again; that there's a possibility that he'd lose his confidant one more time because of the same man."
"I'll talk to him then. And I promise that I won't change if ever Tom leaves again." I said, and we hung up.
