The Sad Before The Smiles

(Flashback)

Me and Jack got married when Ebony was five. We've decided to try for another baby. I get the pregnancy test out of the cabinet. I hold my breath as I take the test. After I take it I wait for it to show.

"Elsa," Jack calls. "You okay in there?" He asks.

"No," I stutter

"What's wrong?"

"It-its negative!" I cry.

I slide down the bath tub wall. I was so hoping Ebony would have a sibling.

"Elsa, there's always next time." Jack calla through the wall.

"No, there won't be a next time. When I went to the doctor." I say, between tears. "Rachel said I can't have anymore children."

"What, why didn't you tell me?"

"I didn't think it was true. I thought it was a misprint!" I cry.

Jack carefully opens the door. He comes in and sits by me. I rest my head on my knees. I feel Jack put his arm around me.

"Elsa. We could always adopt."

"It won't be the same." I tell him.

"I know but if you don't want to adopt, and you can't have any. She won't be alone. When Anna has kids, she'll have them!" He tries to cheer me up.

"I'm sorry Jack. I should've told you!" I cry.

"Elsa, don't beat yourself up over this. We still have Ebony. Not every family has two kids anyways." Jack tells me.

"I know, I know." I wipe my tears away. "I love you Jack. You know I will always love you!" I smile.

"I love you too Mama Bear." I let out a slight giggle.

"Mommy? Daddy? What are you doing on the floor?" Ebony comes into the bathroom with her teddy bear.

"Ebony, Sweetie we thought you were asleep. What are you doing up?" I ask her.

"I had a bad dream." She says, sitting in my lap.

She rests her head on my chest. I lay my head gently on hers. I lean into Jack. The worst day of my life became the best when I discovered I was going to have Ebony.
