I kicked the morning frost off the grass and pulled my jacket close to my chest. I could see my breath in the dark sky and I just smiled. Today was the day. I was going to prove my worth.
I hopped into a helicopter with Fury and we set off to the airport. On the way Nick was drilling me on what to do. "No going out at night unless you are armed. You will not be stupid and go to crazy high school parties."
I listened hard to what he was saying since I didn't want to screw this up but I couldn't focus right. I was going to a place called Midtown school and I was somehow supposed to blend in. I finished school when I was fourteen years old since I was apparently very intelligent and had aced every test that was given to me so I guess I just had to watch my tongue and not sound like a smart ass.
---------------------------------------------
The helicopter landed on top of the airport roof and I hopped out. I had one suitcase with me since basically all I needed in S.H.I.E.L.D was a uniform. The Director shook my hand. "You be safe now. I'll check up on you regularly to see your progress. Feel free to press random buttons in your apartment when you get there. It's child proof."
I rolled my eyes and he handed me something. A credit card. "This is not for reckless spending. Only for clothes and food. Things you actually need. Ok?"
I stood up straight. "Thank you Director."
---------------------------------------------
The plane ride made me nervous. I was about to fly right into something that no S.H.I.E.L.D agent had ever gone far enough into. I was going to go live in Queens. It seemed like a scary thought but boy was I ready for this. Well at least I thought so.The plane touched down and I went to the baggage area now feeling a rock sit in my gut.
I walked out of the airport and got in a cab that took me to my new apartment.
It looked small. It looked kind of run down but colour still came from the roof in a reddish paint.
I took the key from my pocket, put it in the lock and turned.
Inside it looked like Tony Stark had vomited on the whole place. Technology from touch screens to holograms were all in the kitchen.
I dropped my bag on the floor and sat on the fancy black couch. "Blend in he said. Be normal he said. Yep because every fifteen year old in Queens has technology worth thousands."
I walked over to the door to close it when I noticed a button under the light switch. "Well he did say press random buttons."
I pushed my thumb onto the little button and immediately fell back in shock. All the holograms and touch screens on the monitors, TV, fridge and even on the couch arms had disappeared.
In fact almost everything had disappeared and been replaced. The shiny black couch had been replaced by an older but still usable looking one, and the tinted windows were now plain and simple with drapes covering the edges. "How on...what?!"
I had to laugh at the Directors cleverness. It looked normal now.
I raced to my bedroom and saw a plain bed with a brown dresser and a floor length mirror on the wall.
I went to the light switch and pressed the button underneath but nothing happened. I sighed but I could just go shopping anyway. I started walking out to go grab my bag when I heard a click.
I whipped my head around and saw the mirror open. I jumped in delight at the secret door. "Yes yes yes yes! I've always wanted a secret door."
I didn't waste time and raced down to check out what was down there and it certainly didn't disappoint.
A large desk sat in the middle of the room with a touchscreen wall on its left. The fancy touch screens and holograms along with the good furniture were on the roof firmly secured.
Sharon had left notes on the walls and files were in draws.
I rummaged around them when I heard a ring. It was the doorbell. The sound was traveling down one of the pipes.
I quickly shoved the draws shut and ran upstairs. I pressed the button under the light switch and raced to the door.
I straightened my jacket and opened it slowly.
At the door was a boy who looked around my age. He had brown hair and brown eyes just like me.
He stood just a little bit taller than me and had a sort of shyness about him with the way he stood.
"Hi I'm Peter. You just move here?"
I smiled. "Umm yeah about fifteen minutes ago to be exact."
Peter pulled something from his pocket. A bunch of cookies in a bag.
"My Aunt May made these for your family."
I took them gratefully. "Thanks."
Peter raised an eyebrow. "Where is your parents anyhow?"
I felt my throat tighten and I felt it hard to breath. "My mum went to work so she left me to set up and move in."
I mentally face palmed myself but smiled cautiously so he would believe the lie.
He smiled a bit. "Well umm I better go. Got some homework to do and I'll leave you to unpack. Bye."
I waved as he left and I closed the door. I went to the couch and smacked my head onto it. "My mum's at work? How am I supposed to keep up that lie? You flaming idiot."
