This is in Annie's point of view.
Today's the day! It's my last volleyball game as a junior. I'm sad about having the seniors leave the team and all but I'm excited because this means a new beginning for Lipton High volleyball next year. I wake up and check my phone. I have a text from Matthew. Yay!!!
🍐- Good morning. I love you, Annie May Williams. Your gonna kill it today. 😘
I loved it when he said my full name like that. I quickly text back.

I got up and got ready I put on my jersey, number 5, light rolled up jeans,white converses, my hair in double Dutch braids, and my lucky locket. I was on time today so I went to my car and drove to school. We have a rule on our team where we have to drink at least 4 bottles of water and nothing else to drink on the day of the game and we can only eat healthy, so I didn't get to go to Starbucks today. I parked and walked over to the picnic tables and found Matthew. I went and sat down across from him and smiled. "Am so ready for tomorrow! We're going to have so much fun! Don't you think?"
He just kept looking down at his arms. His eyes full of tears. I couldn't see them but I knew by the looks of it what had happened. His father had beaten him, yet again. I feel terrible for letting him stay in Peachville. I see a single tear escape his eyes. I quickly wrap him into a hug and say, "Matthew, I love you but it's not safe for you to be here. You need to go to Tennessee now."
"I have to stay for 3 more days, I'm okay." He said.
"No. You and I both know that you need to leave now." I sternly commanded.
I know that I'm lucky to have a boyfriend like Matthew, but I could not let him put himself through this because of me. I don't know what I'm going to do but I have to do something. I kissed him on the cheek and took his hand.
Then I walked him to his car.
"Bye Matthew, I love you." I said sadly.
"I love you, too." He said choking back tears. He drove off to a whole new state, a whole new life.
I walked back to our table and thought about how I just lost my best friend in the whole entire world.
