Dan's POV
-
Mum drove us to the restaurant our family held this year's gathering. Phil laid his head on my shoulder the whole car ride there, his hand locked in mine.
"Are you boys ready?" Mum turned around after parking.
Phil looked at me. "Yeah. We're ready."
We got out and walked to the door. My grandfather greeted us at the door.
"Daniel! You've grown!"
"No I haven't grandpa. I've been 6ft 2 for a while now." I laughed. He always said that when he saw me.
"Well who's this young man?"
"I'm Phillip. I live with Dan."
"Ah this is Phil. Amazingphil!"
He chuckled hearing my grandpa say his YouTube name.
"Yes, I'm Amazingphil."
We walked inside and my cousins were running wildly. "DANNY!"
"I like your family so far!" Phil smiled.
"Yeah they're not all going to like the fact that... We're in love."
"If not today, they'll have to accept it one day. You're their blood relation."
-
Phil ended up being dragged into playing hide and seek with my cousins, and I sat with my mum.
"Are you going to tell them today?" She whispered.
"How could I get their attention?"
"I'll help you quiet down the group. Just tell me when."
I kissed her on the forehead and proceeded over to my cousins who were hunting for Phil.
"Come on! He's tall. You can surely find him." I teased. Phil was hiding behind the pile of presents laid out. He winked at me and held a finger to his mouth, telling me to be quiet.
They ended up finding him.
-
"Phil?" I pulled him aside.
"Everything okay?"
"Yes, everything's okay.... I'm gonna tell everyone." He hugged me and said, "I'm proud of you."
"I couldn't do this if you weren't here. I see my family loves you.. Almost as much as I do."
He smiled at me and put his hand on my back as we walked over to where my mum was sitting.
"I'm going to need your help now." I whispered in her ear.
"Right now? Alright, Daniel." She stood up and whistled.
"Everyone, Daniel would like to make an announcement." I suddenly felt my heart pound and my hands got sweaty.
I walked over to the front of the building and Phil stood by my side.
-
"I always knew I was unique..." I started. "But I recently admitted to myself that I am unlike my family... Unlike all of my friends.... Besides Phil."
He smiled and whispered, "I believe in you."
"Everyone, I'm... Im gay." I teared up. The crowd went completely silent. I could feel the judgement turning negative for some.
"And I am, too." Phil announced. He slipped his hand into mine and held it tightly. "We hope you can find in your hearts some acceptance for us and support our relationship."
Suddenly there was clapping. My mum was crying and ran towards us, arms open. My cousins rushed after her and before we knew it, there was a massive group hug.... With my boyfriend and me in the middle.
We all grabbed food and sat down to eat when my grandma tapped me on the shoulder.
"How do you kiss?" She said, embarrassed.
"You mean because we're gay?" Phil asked.
"It's nothing different between us, and heterosexual couples."
She laughed and said, "Okay. Okay. I wondered, but I didn't think it was any different." She walked back to her seat and we looked at each other.
"That's a first." Phil giggled.
I laughed with him and we finished eating. After everyone ate, my cousins suggested we play music and have a dance....something different from our traditional holiday.
"It's not every day someone brings their love to meet our family." My grandpa said to my mum.
"They're truly amazing together."
They watched us as we slow-danced to I Won't Give Up by Jason Mraz.
"I love you Phil." I held him close.
"I love you, too, Danny." He kissed me and everything felt right in the world.
