Chapter 9

As soon as Chelsea and I got home with the kids, we discussed what my concert sign should say. After much debate, we came up with "It Takes Two to Raise Two", with an ultrasound picture of each twin flanking the words. Then, I started calling my relatives with the baby news. Heather was the first person I called, and a young teen, probably Jackson's sitter, picked up.

"Hey, is Heather there?" I asked. "It's her friend Brittany, and I have some news."

"She's at the doctor's office," she said. "What's the news?"

"When she gets home, tell her I'm pregnant."

"Really?! That's the same reason Heather went to the doctor! When is it due?"

I groaned internally, remembering the morning I caught Heather with Michael inside her. I decided not to comment and continued the conversation.

"Well, I'm just over eight weeks in, so late next April."

"Great! Did you tell the daddy yet?"

"Um...that's going to be a little complicated. The dad is Ashton Irwin, and he's hard to reach."

"You mean Ashton Irwin, the lead singer of that hot new band that's opening for 1D?!"

I giggled. "I figured you'd fangirl over it. Yes, that's the one!"

"Well, I'll tell Heather as soon as she gets home."

"Thanks, um...what's your name again?"

"It's Ashley."

"Oh, okay. Bye!"

"Bye."

Immediately after I hung up, I called Heather's cell phone to see how her appointment went. She picked up right away.

"Britt, I was just about to call you. Michael got me pregnant!" she announced.

"I know, the sitter told me when I called your house. How far along are you?"

"You're not mad?" Heather paused for a second. "Wait a minute...you too?!"

I laughed. "It's twins, and I'm about eight weeks along."

"Me too! I mean, not the twins part...but how are we gonna tell Ashton and Michael?"

"Don't ask me." Then, I remembered that I'd won three tickets to One Direction's concert in Sydney. "Oh, I've got it! 5 Seconds of Summer is opening for One Direction, right?"

"Yeah."

"I won tickets to the 1D concert in Sydney, so we could hold up a sign!"

"That sounds awesome! When's the concert?"

"October 6th. You could probably drive down here on the fifth, and then we'll fly together. Can you get a sitter by then?"

"Absolutely!"

After Heather, I called my parents and their siblings, and they gave similar reactions. I also told my ex-Marine grandpa, but he was only happy for me until I told her about the one-night stand. That was when he went sour. He said, "Brittany, you better make damn sure that boy treats you and that kid right! If he doesn't, I swear on your grandmother's grave, I'll come over there and throttle him! I've still got the moves, you know! You hear me, young lady?!" To that, I responded with a meek, "Yes, Grandpa" and hung up.

With Grandpa's words still ringing in my head, I got to work on my poster. I opted for pink and blue construction paper for the lettering, and then carefully drew and cut out the letters. It took several sheets of construction paper to get the letters just right, so I spent almost an hour on it. Even then, I wasn't anywhere near done.
