Chapter 20

"Tell me more about your late boyfriend," Calum said. "You told me he died when you were pregnant with your daughter."

"Yeah, I was about four weeks out, and my ex—his name was Adrian—had been on his way home from work when a semi crashed into him and killed him."

"Oh, wow! What was he like?"

"He was cute, smart, funny—everything you could want in a guy. But then I met you and realized you're even better."

"I'm happy to hear that, Chels."

"Thanks." We paused to let Gracie do her business, and I picked up the poop with a plastic bag. "So, how did y'all become a band?"

"It was Mikey's idea, just a spur-of-the-moment thing. He was like, 'Hey, let's make a band!' and then we started making covers for YouTube."

"What about Ashton?"

"He joined us eight months later. Michael knew him on Facebook, so he messaged him asking if he'd like to join our band because we needed a drummer. Then, I made it official—sort of like a proposal."

I giggled. "So you literally got down on one knee?"

"I did!"

Calum's POV

Our conversation lasted the whole walk, and when we got back to the shelter, I couldn't help but notice how sad Chelsea looked.

"What's wrong, Chelsea?" I asked. "You don't look so happy."

"It's just that Gracie's gonna have to go back into that cramped little kennel, and I don't like that."

Gracie sat down and whined, a pleading look in her eyes.

"I think she likes you, too," I said to Chelsea. "Perhaps you could adopt her?"

Chelsea put her happy face back on. "I could, couldn't I? Gracie, do you like me?"

Gracie stood up on her hind legs, leaned against me, and let out a little yap, as if to say, "Now you're getting it!"

I giggled and stroked her fur. "Let's do it, Cal!"

Brittany's POV

The kids and I were all taking naps when my cell phone rang. It was Chelsea, which confused me since she was currently on her date with Calum.

"Chelsea?" I said when I picked up. "Did something go wrong?"

Chelsea laughed. "Oh, no! Quite the opposite. We're at the shelter again, and I was wondering—didn't you say you were thinking about getting Alexis a puppy?"

I had been considering a dog for Alexis to help with her PTSD after being kidnapped.

"Yeah! Did you find one?"

"We sure did! Her name is Gracie, and she's a corgi/Lab mix. Why don't you stop by and take a look?"

"Okay! Give me fifteen."

After I ended the call, I looked at the time. It was almost time for the kids to wake up, so after I freshened up a little and turned my camera on to vlog, I rounded them up.

"Lexi, do you wanna go somewhere special?" I asked when I got to her room.

"Where we goin'?"

"We're gonna go look at puppies, and if you're a good girl, we'll even take one home!"

Alexis threw her covers back and bounced out of bed. "Yay!"
