Dear Maggie,
The South has seceded from the Union. They are no longer under Lincoln's control. The North wants peace. Not violence, peace. Lincoln told his troops not to attack the South unless they started to shoot. And shoot they did. We could have avoided the war if it wasn't for the South wanting to keep slaves. And for what reason? For their economy. For free labor. These Southerners do not care who gets hurt, who has their freedom taken away. Whether it be treating slaves unfairly or costing lives by starting a war, it is the South's fault.
The Civil War has been hard on everyone. Our supplies are limited and we have to watch behind us just about every minute to make sure we are safe. All Elijah and I can hope for is that we stay out of the battlefield, and even we are not even sure of that.
Lately, Elijah has been talking about listing into the army to fight the Confederates. I immediately tell him no, that he won't survive, but he can't seem to get his mind off of it.
He feels that because he will be going against the South he will be fighting slavery, and that was the main goal, after all. It was why we met and why I became an abolitionist.
I hope very much that we will win this war and the world will finally be rid of slavery.
Very hopeful,
Ruth
