"So how does it feel to have your first official assignment?" Lucas asks after the yearbook club meeting had ended. He was wearing a white t-shirt with a funny saying on it along with his signature green jacket and I tried hard to pretend I didn't think he looked really cute wearing it. Keyword: Tried.
"It feels pretty good." I answer honestly. It's the one thing I know that'll help me feel like things are getting back to normal I think silently to myself.
"So what'd you get? A football game?" He asks me. Lucas had gotten to the meeting late so he didn't hear Mrs.Welch call out assignments which was kind of nice because that means I'd get to tell myself.
"Okay so I know it's not the most glamorous and exciting thing ever but it is only my 1st assignment so cut me some slack." I warn. He nods and waits for me to continue.
"I'm in charge of taking photos of Spencer Hastings debate club campaign." I say and wait for his reaction.
"Really?" he says impressed.
"Yeah Mrs. Welch said that if my pictures turn out well, I'll get my very own spread in the newspaper!" I say trying to contain my excitement. "She's also giving me another assignment for yearbook in a week or so since the campaigns kind of a long term thing which is awesome too." I still didn't have a job which meant I didn't have anything to do most days after school so spending my time taking photos was nothing to complain about.
"Newspaper and Yearbook? Good for you Melanie. Only people she really likes get the chance to take photos for both. Also If it helps, do you want me to introduce you to Spencer?" he asks nicely.
"No need, I've already meant her before." I say gathering my camera gear.
"You have?" he asks following me as I collect a camera lens and a battery charger.
"Uh-huh. She's friends with the girl I'm working on a project in my history class with. Hanna...Marin I think. Do you know her?"
Lucas seems surprised and doesn't say anything.
"Is everything alright?" I ask, unsure of why he suddenly went silent.
"Yeah..yeah...uh Hanna used to do yearbook club so I uh..I know her from that." he stumbles through his answer.
"Where were you earlier by the way?" I ask zipping up my camera bag once I've checked to make sure I had everything I needed.
"Huh?" Lucas asks distracted.
"You were late...to the meeting." I say "You know that thing that's really important to you." I say messing with him.
"Does it matter?" He asks suddenly defensive
"No. It was just a question, sorry." I say grabbing my book bag from my desk.
"Well I've gotta run" I say changing the subject "I texted Hanna at the beginning of the meeting and she was able to get Spencer to set aside some time for me today. I'm meeting up with her in the cafeteria in like 10 minutes so I'm gonna get going."
"Well look at you, already a step a head of the game. " he says sounding normal again. I don't know what's up with him and his mini mood swings but I don't have much time to give to question it.
"Trying to be." I smile. "Later." I wave and leave Lucas and the other member of yearbook club who'd stuck around after the meeting.
Unlike my first day I know exactly where to find the cafeteria. Walking down the winding halls I suddenly hear a continuous tap, tap, tap, tap sound growing louder and louder the closer I got to my destination. Curious I follow the sound, turning around a corner and notice just a girl in the empty hallway dressed in all black walking alone.
