My second day of school was not much better than the first. It went by slightly more quickly and most of my time was spent being nervous about tonight. Lucas could be the only friend I make here and the yearbook seems really important to him so I don't want to mess up tonights shoot.

I go straight home after school and finish the reading I fell asleep doing last night to pass the time before the football game. After that I start to get ready, debating on what I should wear. I decide on a light blue sun dress, one of my favorites.

I wanted to look nice going to my first football game at Rosewood, who knows who i'll meet? At about 5:40 I go downstairs to get my shoes and my grandfather looks at my outfit and smiles.

"Do you have a date Melanie? You look lovely." He says with a warm smile.

"What? Umm no I uh..." I say trying to hide my reddening cheeks.

"There's a football game tonight." I leave out the part that I'll be shooting it with Lucas.

"Oh that sounds fun! I hope you have a nice time dear." he says as I slip on some black flats. I smile and say thanks as I rush out the door.

I park my car near the field and look around to see if Lucas was there yet. I see him leaning against his car and he smiles and waves.

"Hey!" I say as I walk up to him.

"Wow.." he says as he looks at my dress.

"Am I over dressed? I wasn't sure what to wear and I thought..." I begin to ramble.

"No its just...you look wonderful" he says making me smile. He stares into my eyes for a few seconds before nervously looking away.

"Thank you" I say and we start to walk towards the stadium.

"So how was your second day at the ever so wonderful Rosewood High?" he asks.

"Uggh I got lost twice, missed lunch because I could't find the cafeteria and I got a lot of stares. As if I didn't already know I'm labeled as 'the new girl'" I joke which makes him laugh.

"Well I usually eat up in the yearbook room if you ever want to..." his voice trails off.

"Yeah i'll probably take you up on that offer" I say with a smile.

We reach the field just as the game is starting. The game wasn't something to remember. A bunch of sweaty guys running into each other, nothing new.

As boring as it was Lucas always seemed to take great shots at all different angles and places around the field. I think I caught him staring at me a few times but tried not to notice.

The game ends and Rosewood was beaten by a landslide. The crowd didn't seem to mind though.

We exit the field and find a place to wait. High school parking lots take ages to clear.

We take a seat on a bench outside of the school and watch the parking lot slowly empty.

"So do you like it here?" I ask as I hand the camera to him to put away.

"Sometimes. Theres a....always something happening so thats cool I guess" he answers.

"How long have you been in yearbook?" I ask.

"About two years. I spend most of my time working on it" he says.

"So what got you interested in photography?" I ask.

"You ask a lot of questions" he says jokingly and I just smile and shrug.

"I'm uhh not sure" he begins.

"I uh....I was never really good anything but when I picked up a camera for the first time, I knew it was something I could be not just good but great at. Taking pictures, capturing moments that without you would have been lost forever it just...I don't know" he paused trying to think of the right words to say.

"I guess it just.....It makes me feel like I matter you know?"

I looked at him in awe which is a look he mistook for something else.

"Sorry, didn't mean to weird you out....."

"No no its not that! I was just surprised you felt that way. Not many people are as passionate as you are." I say as I smile to assure him I meant what I said and he returns a small smile.

"Uh thanks" he says with a smile.

Before I get a chance to ask another question a group of football players head towards us and Lucas looks nervous.

"Everything okay?" I ask.

"Yeah, its um...nothing" he says, his eyes focusing on the group as they drive toward us, rolling down their windows and come to a stop.

"Hey Hermy!! Aww you made a friend. Does she know about your little condition?" the driver says and the group erupts with laughter.

I'm not sure whats going on so I stay quite.

"Are you the boy or the girl? or both?" another player says and they all burst out laughing again.

Lucas says nothing and just stares at the ground.

"Come on guys Herm's being a little bitch, lets go." the driver says and Lucas's face flushes with embarrassment.

The groups laughs again and waves to us as they speed away.

"Who the hell do they think they are?? Are you okay?" I ask confused at what just took place.

"Its nothing, don't worry about it." he says quickly and jumps up walking fast to his car.

"Are you okay?" I ask again. "Has this happened before?".

Still no answer.

"Why did they keep calling you Hermy? What's that mean? And seriously are you okay?" I ask and hope to get answer.

He stays silent. He gets to his car and reaches for the door handle. I jump in between him and the door to his car.

Our bodies are very close to eachother, his face inches from mine. I feel a slight rush being this close to Lucas.

This catches me off guard but I try not to think about it.

"What are you doing?" He asks with a surprised expression on his face.

"Will you please tell me whats wrong?" I say as our eyes meet. He stares into my eyes but doesn't say anything.

"I mean you don't have to if you don't want to but at least tell me if you're okay? Those guys were jerks and I just wanna know if you're alright." I say hoping he'll finally say something.

We stare at each other for a few more moments before he lets out a sigh.

"Yeah...I'm fine" he says.

I'm not sure I believe him but at least he finally answered me.

"Okay good. Do you wanna talk about it?" I ask and hope that he says yes.

"It's really nothing....they just....It's.....fine. Do you want to meet tomorrow and we can go over tonights pictures and maybe...talk about it." he says.

"I'd love too" I say and smile. He gives me a small half smile back.

"Meet me here at 7 and I can drive us to the grille." he says.

"The Grille?" I ask.

"Yeah, it's a popular restaurant around here, you'll like it" he assures me.

"Okay, I'll see you tomorrow. Good night Lucas." I say and begin to walk towards my car thats parked a few spaces away.

"Hey Melanie?" I hear as I reach my car and turn around.

"Yeah?"

"Thanks" Lucas says with a small smile then gets into his car.

"You're welcome" I say under my breath and start my car.

Lucas seems to be keeping a few  secrets but who am I to judge? I'm glad he's the first friend I made here. Hopefully not the last.
