Chapter 12:

Hours turned to days and the traveling was relentless. Drake didn’t stop for any sort of break and Jade could feel her tight muscles needed stretching. Still, she dared not speak a word. Drake was the quietest she had ever seen him. Even before he opened up to her he still held some conversation no matter how light. He hadn’t uttered a word since the horses’ hooves started moving.

The tension of the carriage could be cut with a knife and Jade didn’t like it one bit. She fidgeted to reposition herself and Drake eyed her cautiously. His eyes were cold and harsh unlike anything she had ever seen from him until lately. He wasn’t the same person she had thought he was. She didn’t know what she was going to do but sitting there silently wasn’t going to work for long.

“If you’re going to kill me, please just get it over with.” Jade blurted.

She didn’t know why she had blurted it and she felt regret as soon as it came out of her mouth. His eyes bore hard into her for several quiet minutes before he relaxed. He actually let his shoulders slump and his deep breath out, creating warmth spreading throughout the carriage.

“I do not know what to do you with Jade. You should not have been there.” He regretfully spoke.

“Let me go?” Jade smiled innocently.

“Not a chance. Your fate is not for me to decide. I only hope the council shows mercy on your soul.” He shook his head.

“Council? What council? What is this about!” Jade shrieked.

“You are in no position to ask questions girl!” Drake yelled. He lifted his hand up straight to his side as if to strike her. “Remember this Jade. I own you now and you are to obey my every command.”

She gulped and shivered looking away from him. Changing her attention, she stared out the carriage window at the stars. The stars always brought her peace of mind though it was hard to concentrate on them with Drake’s threats rolling loose in her mind. She never pictured him to be the threatening type. The part that gave her the most chills was his emphasis on ‘every’ command. It even made her blush slightly as to what he meant by that. If he even thought he was going to get her body he had another thing coming. Her first time wasn’t going to be forced and she didn’t care if it killed her to fight for it.

“So this is how it is going to be now?” Jade whispered.

She saw his hand lower out of the corner of her eye and what seemed like the look of regret on his face. Jade didn’t pay his look any heed though as she continued looking at the sky. The stars were dull that night with clouds throughout the sky, but the moon was bright even though it was a crescent. The melodic sound of owls hooting entered her mind and she closed her mind at peace. The smell of roasting chestnuts entered the carriage and she nearly drooled over the scrumptious taste it gave her mouth. Drake hadn’t given her anything but stale bread the past few days. She sure did miss a proper meal.

“It is going to be how I say it is going to be. We will ride to the sea and cross the ocean where we will meet with the council. They will know how to deal with you.” Drake said.

“Deal with me? I am a person, you can’t just kidnap me!” Jade screamed.

“Kidnap? You are my slave, there is no kidnapping. You are to do as I wish, and you best be lucky I am not in the mood for coitus.”

Jade gulped at his words. She was lucky indeed that he wasn’t in that sort of mood. In fact she felt that there still might be some good in him if he chose not to force himself on her. At least she hoped there was something there to salvage. Of course she wasn’t even sure whether or not he had an evil plot or not, though it sure seemed he was from the act of murder. The thought still sent chills through her spine.

“I would die before I let that happen.” Jade said avoiding his stare.

“Oh really? From what I recall it wasn’t but a week ago when you wanted it. You wanted me and would have given yourself to me without a second thought.” Drake smirked.

With that Jade began crying into her hands. She faced as far away from Drake as she could and let the tears flow. She had done so much crying lately that she didn’t know how much more water she had for tears. Her life was so far past anything she ever thought it would be. She never thought it could get any worse than being with the master, but she was very wrong.

She tried to keep focus on serenity but the events made it hard. Finally she let her sobs diminish and she wiped away her tears. Drake still stared at her intently, refusing to let go of his gaze. Questions rolled around in her head, most of them she debated if she wanted them answered. She wanted hope, but she decided that she had to know the truth.

“The time we shared, did it mean nothing?” She asked lowering her gaze away from his blazing green eyes.

“It was foolish of me to think I could connect with someone like you.”

“Someone like me? What is wrong with me?” Her voice came out shaky.

“You are not what I am. It could never be.” His voice faded slightly as if disappointed.

“Did you even care for me?” She shakily asked.

He looked at her for a moment, eyes locked onto hers. His mouth opened but he shut it instantly. He turned his head to the side to look out the window and at the stars.

“No.” He said coldly.

She had to fight hard to hold back tears that begged to reach her face. Still she had to turn away from him, and she found herself gazing out the window as well. The stars were a beautiful sight, even though they were dull that night, as dull as her heart felt. They were still out there, and she wondered if there was still somebody out there for her, somewhere. The hope, however dim like the stars, still shone a small light that perhaps one day she would meet the one for her. If, of course, she was ever able to get out of her mess with Drake. Still, his name hung in her head, and she indeed was hurt. She was hurt from his answer and it sank her heart down, but she would not give up.
