Chapter 42:
Spain was still a new country and still being established after being united under one house. The kingdom of Castile was no longer, and hadn’t been for many years. Jade looked around the land as they traveled in horse and carriage in wonder. She’d never been to Spain, she traveled all through Europe and France, but Spain was new to her. The language they spoke was foreign, and she was relieved to find the Drake spoke it fluently. In fact the more she studied Drake, the more she realized how similar he was to the natives in Spain with his darker complexion.
They traveled with horse and carriage across the land. The only one would couldn’t come was Selaras. She was half human and half fish, quite literally as a mermaid and could not choose one or the other. Jade worried for her, but ultimately knew that she would be safe underwater. The rest were in horse and carriage with her as they traveled.
The three half-faeries traveled with them which brought lightheartedness to everyone at their giddy attitude. They kept Jade company for the most part as Drake kept busy in the front of the carriage, directing them in the right direction.
The trip to Seville didn’t take as long as expected and they reached the outskirts of the large city in a few days scarce of a week. Drake dared not bring them too far into the city and they camped just outside. Everybody remained quiet for the most part and Jade took the opportunity to get closer to Drake.
“Are they here?” she whispered.
“Yes, they are going to perform near La Alameda tonight.”
“La Alameda?” Jade asked.
“It is a garden built near the Guadalquivir River in honor of Hercules. Tonight they will perform in honor of Hercules.”
“You look worried,” Jade touched his cheek gently with her hand.
“A plague has been going around Spain, killing thousands. As far as I can tell it travels along everywhere that Mr. Brooks has been performing his shows.”
“Do you think-”
“I think we should be careful,” Drake said.
“What do we do?” Jade asked.
“Everyone stays here. You and I will go check it out. Once we see what we’re dealing with we will be able to coordinate what we need to do.”
Jade smiled and grabbed Drake’s warm hand to press against her lips. At first she was afraid that he wouldn’t bring her into the heart of the third largest city in Europe, her fear was that he would think it was too dangerous. She knew she could handle herself, perhaps at first when they met she had been naïve, but since then she’d grown. That didn’t mean she was the best at her ability yet, but she knew she could handle herself.
His faith in her had grown, despite all the chaos they had been through. She reveled in his touch in the short moments they shared before they would have to depart. They wanted to scout out the tents before the events started later that night and at least see what they were up against. All of that could wait as she sat there curled up on Drake’s muscular shoulder.
