Chapter 46:

Jade scrambled to her feet as she watched her friend Autumn and Mr. Brooks kissed. Her whole world seemed to tumble upside down as she watched. She still couldn’t believe how such a thing was possible. Autumn had always been there for her, she knew the way Mr. Brooks treated her, and yet there Autumn was, wrapped up in Mr. Brooks arms.

Autumn shrunk back from Mr. Brooks and turned her face to Jade and smirked. She bit her bottom lip and pushed Mr. Brooks away. He dropped to his knees and knelt his head towards Autumn.

“How could you Autumn?” Jade asked.

“How could I?” Autumn laughed, “You are still so young and foolish Jade.”

Jade shivered and took two steps back, unsure of what to make of the events unfolding around her. She nearly stumbled when she bumped into something hard and she turned to find three men standing behind her blocking her exit. Jade turned back to Autumn and noticed her former friend cackling.

“You were my friend!” Jade shouted.

“Was I Jade? I’ve been watching you for many years now, even stayed close to you. You were supposed to be mine, until that wretched wyvern found you and ruined everything!”

“You are the one,” Jade gasped, “Mr. Brooks-”

“Is nothing, he is weak, insubstantial, a mere pawn in the greater scheme.”

“Why are you doing this?” Jade asked.

“Why? Look at Mr. Brooks, look at the rest of them, the so called kings of the world. They are weak, none stand a chance to the likes of me. I wanted you with me, Jade. You were supposed to be by my side, together the two of us could conquer not only Europe, but the world. Men cannot help themselves around us, especially once you learn your full potential. Men are weak, it is us who should rule these countries, and who better?”

“What are you?” Jade asked.

Autumn smiled, “I’m half naiad, and men fall at their feet before me.”

“It is not right to conquer because you can overpower men’s minds,” Jade said.

“That is a shame, I really wanted you by my side, together we could have conquered all in great time. Drake destroyed your mind, filled it with so called love. Love is a lie, and it will destroy you. No matter, it will take more time alone, but perhaps it will be for the best.”

“I won’t let you get away with this,” Jade said.

“Charming,” Autumn smiled before turning to Mr. Brooks. “My dear, kill her.”

Mr. Brooks didn’t hesitate at he got to his feet and grabbed her oak scimitar from the ground. He walked straight for Jade, and she leapt out of the way of his first slash. She concentrated her mind to the oak in his hands and forced it to transform into something other than a weapon. He slashed it at her again, but instead of a scimitar it became a hula hoop and trapped her in the center of the ring. She smiled and took a step closer to him where she shoved her knee to his groin. He groaned and collapsed to the ground with a curse.

Jade grabbed the hula hoop and dashed towards Autumn. Before Autumn could raise her arms to defend herself, Jade was before her – slamming her hula hoop around Autumn’s surprised body. Jade tugged the hula hoop towards her so that Autumn’s face was mere inches away from her own. Autumn didn’t appear scared, but the surprise on her face was unmistakable, her beautiful blue eyes were bulged and her jaw clenched. Jade smiled at her former friend and thrust her elbow into Autumn’s jaw.

Autumn collapsed to the ground in a soundless heap with hula hoop still around her. Jade willed the oak to transform and watched as the wood changed from a hula hoop into vines that tightened against Autumn’s body. Jade knelt to the ground and grabbed the keys from Autumn.

When Jade turned around she immediately ducked to escape a punch from Mr. Brooks. She swiftly backed up and dodged a few more strikes from the man. He withdrew his whip and came after her. Jade dove to the ground and crossed her legs in a scissor around Mr. Brooks’ ankle. He collapsed to the ground next to Autumn and Jade used the chance to escape his clutches.

She ran over to Drake and fiddled with the keys in her hand to unlock his chains. He opened his eyes and looked at her. Drake was weak, but when he saw her, he smiled. His simple reaction weakened Jade at the knees. She found the right key and took the chains off of him, but he was still too weak to stand. He collapsed in her arms and she held onto him lovingly, she caressed her hands through his hair and kissed his forehead.

Jade turned around to see Mr. Brooks already back up and dashing towards her. She looked around for anything she could use as a weapon since her oak scimitar was preoccupied. All she could find were the chains on the ground at her side. She scooped them up in her hands and hacked them towards Mr. Brooks.

Mr. Brooks stepped to the side and missed the chains completely as they came his way. He snarled and grabbed the whip off his belt and slashed them at Jade. The silence of the air broke with a snap as the whip struck Jade’s shoulder. She cried out in pain and stumbled backwards, tears cascading down her face.

She felt hopeless as she stumbled backwards defenseless. The whip struck her several more times and she couldn’t control her tears anymore. There was nothing left for her to do, she was defeated. Autumn was still immobile, but that meant her oak was too far out of her reach and that left her without a weapon. Mr. Brooks continued on with his whip, slash, slash, slash. Her entire body ached as it tore into her flesh from chest to toes. Welts scattered across her entire body and the pain was too great for her to even attempt getting up.

Mr. Brooks cackled as he tossed the whip to the ground and grabbed Jade, forcing her to her feet. He grabbed her butchered and matted hair and forced her back to him. She sobbed as she felt cold steel against the bottom left of her throat. Despite all the pain she was going through, and knowing her death was imminent, all she could do was think of Drake, and how she desperately hoped he would make it.

The blade never cut into her neck, but fell from its place. Jade heard the metal bounce against the ground at her feet as Mr. Brooks screamed from behind her. She turned around to see Mr. Brooks on fire from his back as he rolled around on the ground.

Jade turned with eyes wide to see Drake stumbling forward trying to get his balance. She wanted to rush to him, but a blazing Mr. Brooks was in the way as he got back up to his feet. Drake stood now, steadying himself as if barely able to stay upright, and he stared daggers into Mr. Brooks.

Drake’s eyes turned to emerald flame as his copper skin turned to green scales. He took one step forward and opened his mouth. Green flame spiraled from his throat and encircled Mr. Brooks as he screamed. Jade watched in horror as her former master disappeared in flames and fell to the ground in a pile of ash.

Drake stumbled and fell, but Jade rushed to him and kept him from collapsing all the way to the ground. Jade wanted to nurture him, but she knew there wasn’t much time. She turned and saw Autumn nearly broken out of the vines, her bodyguards were helping her to her feet and another dozen entered the tent with weapons drawn.

Jade steadied Drake and backed into a corner. She feared there was little else they could do. At that moment tearing cloth echoed in her ears and she turned around to see Stargazer leap into the tent behind her with the three faeries and a few other half-breeds they saved. They rushed by her and began fighting against the guards. She stumbled on her way out as she searched for Autumn, but her old friend disappeared in the chaos. Jade searched one last time, but gave up as she dashed out the exit and into freedom.
