Chapter 15:

The carriage was destroyed and Drake stacked the bodies into a pile, including the dead carriage driver, and burned them with his own fire. He still cautiously eyed Jade from time to time, not trusting to let her out of his sight for longer than a few minutes. She sighed as various thoughts rambled through in her head. She was scared of Drake because he didn’t seem human, but now she began to question herself if she were even human. She didn’t know anything about her heritage. There wasn’t even a painting to be shown of her mother and father, only the memory left in her mind.

It was nightfall now and the stars shone brighter than before. The moon was new and so wasn’t anywhere in the sky. Without the light of the moon the stars were able to flourish and seemed to make everything else dim in their shadow. Jade lay on her back on the soft grass, the smell of fresh trees and grass soothed her nose. She felt at peace for the first time in a long while. She was able to keep warm near the fire but she wasn’t too close, and besides she didn’t want to know what Drake was doing.

She assumed that she was still considered his prisoner, but she calculated that if he knew as much as she did about what happened, he might not be so persistent on that subject. Her mind still tried to make sense of it. It shocked her when she somehow imagined the branch in her hand to be a sword and it blew her mind when she looked back down and it had become one. The most amazing part of all was how sharp it was, as if it were a real sword. Nothing about what had happened made sense. She shook her head in dizziness, not wanting to dwell on it anymore.

Once the fire was blazing full, Drake walked by her and lay down next to her. She glanced over for an instant before looking back to the stars. The fireflies were back in the air scattered about, but they weren’t following her any longer. They looked like shooting stars themselves in the night sky soaring around. It was then that she saw a star shooting across the sky, but this time she did not make a wish. Instead she watched intently as it disappeared into nothingness.

“Why are they after me?” Jade whispered.

“They aren’t after you, they’re trying to stop me.” Drake muttered not facing her but continuing to stare in the sky.

“They were trying to distract you. They sent the two strongest after you, but the most numbers after me. Why would they do that when I look to be the weakest, if they are not after me?” Jade questioned turning her head to look at Drake.

“I… They-” Drake cut himself short cursing under his breath.

“What are you not telling me?” Jade asked.

Drake looked at her now, head lying in the grass but his gaze was far from hers. Instead it seemed to be fighting a battle inside of his mind. Perhaps he was trying to work out the pieces in his mind, or he could have been deciding what he would reveal to her.

“I am in this now too Drake… the least you could do is tell me what is going on.” Jade breathed softly.

His gaze caught hers now, for real this time. His beautiful green sparkling eyes with swirls throughout stared thoughtful into hers. Concern found its way back into them as if he cared for her safety and that made Jade’s heart jump.

“What do you know about your past?” Drake asked.

“Nothing. All I remember is being part of the circus. I do not even remember my parents.”

“You could be one of them then… and right under my nose…” Drake muttered.

“One of what?” Jade gasped.

His eyes were lost for a moment into the corners of his socket and he seemed to retrace his thoughts and make sense of them. Yet it still wasn’t helping Jade out any because he seemed to refuse to answer her question. Suddenly his eyes snapped back towards her and they opened deeply.
