“If I may ask, what is up with you guys and water?” I faintly heard my mother say. Opening my eyes slowly and groggily, I looked around the room. I was lying on my stomach, arms stretched out on either side of me; feet doing the same thing, making me look as if I was going to start making snow angels.
“What’d you say, mom?” I questioned, getting up. “Why am I wet?” I muttered, looking at my clothes. But then what happened last night flew into my mind, and I could feel my cheeks getting red.
“Oh.” Is all that I could think to say. Where’s Chase?
“Chase doesn’t look very comfortable.”
“Where is he?” But right after it came out of my mouth, I got my answer. On my bedroom floor is my best friend laying there with the clothes he had on in the rain. No blanket, no sleeping bag, no nothing. Just him and his damp clothes. And now my damp carpet. But I shouldn’t be mad at him for getting my carpet wet; my bed spread is soaked, also.
“Oh, we, uh.” What’s the point in lying? It’s not like it was illegal. “Well, we decided to go outside and play in the rain.” My face still red, I looked away from my mother. Sounds like something 10 year olds do. I guess whenever I’m with my best friend, though, it’s as if I never passed age 11.
“I see. Well you guys should get cleaned up. Throw your bedspread down to get washed and get some towels under Chase for the carpet.”
“Right.” I muttered. “Chase.” I said. But he didn’t do anything. Just stirred, and flipped to his side, facing me. “Chase.” I said a little louder. Another stir. “Chase!” I said loudly. I picked up my damp pillow, and threw it at his head. “Chase.” I said. Getting up slowly, Chase stretched and gave me a smile.
“Good morning, sleepy head.” I said.
“Morning.” He said. Staring at me for a while, he asked “how damp is your bed?”
“Pretty damp.” I smirked.
“I wanted to surprise you.” Chase said after a few moments of silence.
“I know, and it was really sweet.” I said, sitting up all the way, scooting over to the right side of my bed to let Chase sit on my left.
“No, I mean coming home early.” He looked at me. “I wanted to surprise you so I got on a 5:30 flight, flew over here and waited for you to get you Starbucks coffee. That’s when I put the sign up and just waited for the right moment. But before I got here, my manager made sure that she knew for a fact that no paparazzi would find out that I wasn’t on the flight they thought I’d be on. I had a disguise and everything: hat, glasses, even a fake goatee.” He said with a little smile, which automatically made me smile. He always loved being in disguise and pretending to be someone he wasn’t.
“When I got to the airport here, since no one knew I was here there was little no absolutely no paparazzi. But just in case, I started out driving a Volkswagen. Classy, I know. Then, just in case, I switched to my limo driver driving me in a Durango to here. That’s the story.”
I just stared at him for a few seconds. Maybe it was a minute or two. Maybe six, I don’t know. But it that was such a sweet idea of him. Makes me feel like he was thinking about me the whole time. Shows me how much he missed me.
I wrapped my arms around his waist, and put my head on his shoulder as he did the same.
“I really am glad you’re back.” Our heartfelt moment was cut short by the sound of my dad saying- “breakfast, you two!”
“Oh, James.” Chase said to my dad, and I chuckled.
“C’mon,” I stated getting off my bed, walking around to the other side and holding my hand out to take Chase’s. He took it, and we ventured out my door and into the smell of blueberry muffins, pancakes and syrup.
“So, what do you two plan on doing today?” My mom asked while serving us both pancakes.
“Never talked about it.” I said, throwing a forkful of pancake into my mouth.
“Yeah, I don’t know. What did we used to do?”
Looking up to try to help me remember, I start listing. “Movies, shopping, pool-”
“Pool! We’ll be by the pool today.”
“Sounds like a plan to me.” My father said.
“Same here.” I mentioned.
“Well, problem solved.” Chase said, giving an overly cheesy smile and a wink before stuffing his mouth full with muffin.
