Chapter 8: Hunting

"We have chosen for you to..."

Oakstar paused.

Tension became larger as time slowed down.

"...stay."

Sighs of relief flooded our group.

A cat that looked like a lion jumped out of the bushes. "Hello, I am Lionmane." He said. "I am Oakstar's deputy."

"Well, nice to meet you Lionmane. I'm Rainbowtail. And these are my friends Harry, Niall, Zayn, Louis, and Liam." I meowed.

Everyone waved or stepped foreword as I said their name.

Lionmane said, "You all need to pass a test. If you don't pass, you will have to train as an apprentice." He said.

"Okay, thanks." I said

I padded over to the guys.

"Hey, guys, since I'm Rainbowtail, and they're Oakstar and Lionmane, I hope you've realized that, while we're here, we need to switch names." I said.

"We were actually just talking about that." Liam says.

"How many cats are there?" Harry questioned.

"More than thirty." I answered simply.

"Wow." He said in awe.

"Also, we have to take a test to determine whether we need training or not." I added.

"Training?" Louis questioned.

"Yeah, it's where you get a mentor to train you to fight, hunt, defend yourself, stuff like that. While you're in the training stage, you're called an apprentice." I say.

"You'll probably be the only one to pass." Zayn says.

"I don't know." I say. "Sometimes even the biggest warriors fan cant get all the moves right." I say, trying to pull a hunting stalk.

"What are you doing?" Zayn asks.

"Practicing my hunting stalk." I meow.

"Oh, okay." He answers.

We walk over to the leader and deputy. "We are ready for the test." I announce.

"Okay, we will split up into two groups. One of you go on that side of the border," he flicks his tail to the side, "and the other go to that side." Oakstar said.

He continued, "I'll take Rainbowtail, Harry, and Zayn."

Lionmane meowed, "so I'll take Niall, Liam, and Louis."

"Good luck." Harry said to Louis.

"You too." Louis meows back.

"We will be watching you, only you can't see us." Oakstar said.

Lionmane looked at us. "Begin." He said.

I padded over a few tail lengths and turned around to see Harry and Zayn.

"Okay guys, I think this is the hunting part of the test, I think we can do this together." I say, "follow me."

I weave through trees like a snake.

Padding lightly, I sniff for any prey.

To my luck, I smell a vole. I signal for Harry and Zayn to stay put, and I slide into a bush.

I peek out the other end to see a vole. I silently creep up on it, trying to keep my head low and my tail not dragging, I pounced on it.

I bit into it's neck and finished it.

I proudly walk back with the vole in my jaws.

"Wow, already a catch." Harry whispers. "Let me try." He says.

He finds a mouse at a tree trunk, plump and fat.

Pff, easy catch, I think.

Harry copies me. He pounces a bit too early, but still makes it and bites the mouse to finish it.

"Nice catch." I say.

"Okay, Zayn, your turn." I whisper.

He sneaks up on a fluffy white bob of tail. Oh no. He found a rabbit. He couldn't catch that with his hunger!

He pounces on... Nothing. The rabbit ran away. "This is hard!" Zayn complains a bit too soon.

"It's just your misfortune you found a rabbit. They're really fast." I said.

"That doesn't make me feel better." He said grumpily.

Oakstar leaped down from a tree.

"Nice job, all of you." He said, looking at our catch.

"It's okay Zayn, first time I tried to catch a rabbit I couldn't do it either." He meowed, trying to make Zayn feel better.

Zayn didn't say anything.

"Okay, I caught a squirrel. Harry, you and Zayn can share your mouse, and me and Rainbowtail can have our kill." Oakstar said.

I took a big bite out of my vole.

This is better than my old food!

"Wow, Rainbowtail, you were right! This is good!" Harry says.

"Yeah, one thing I look foreword doing again." Zayn says.
