As Annie and I approach my mailbox, we see Alessa and Julia sitting beneath the big oak tree in my front yard.
"Hey guys!" Annie yells in their direction.
I pull open the front part of the mailbox and reach in. I feel a thick package and pull it out. The package looks like Annie's. Alessa see's me holding the package and runs to me with Julia not far behind.
"You're going to fill it out?" she asks excitedly as she quickly approaches me.
"Yeah." I elbow Annie in the side and say, "Annie is making me do it."
Annie pretends to be hurt. "I am not! Victoria said she would!"
"Whatever," I say. "Let's get inside. It's boiling out here." Summer's in Bonita are not fun.
When we get inside Julia asks, "Can we help you guys fill it out? Pleeeeeease?" she begs.
Annie and I look at each other and she says, "Sure. Just don't mark on the papers. Got it?"
Alessa and Julia nod their heads enthusiastically. Annie and I make our way towards the table and Alessa comes back with two pens. We open our packages and pull out the thick, fancy selection form.
"I feel like royalty just holding this paper," Annie sighs.
"Whatever." I say as I roll my eyes.
"Ok," Julia says looking at the form. "Question One: How old are you?"
"That should be easy," I mutter and the girls laugh.
I put down 17 and Annie puts down 16. Her birthday is in a few months.
"Question Two: What color is your hair?" Alessa reads.
My hair is a mix of both my parents. I have my mothers brown hair and my fathers red making my hair a very dark reddish color.
"Hmmm. I don't want to put just blonde." Annie states. "Maybe platinum gold or yellow sunshine?"
"Ooo, platinum gold sounds cool!" Alessa sighs and Annie writes it down. "What are you going to put Victoria?" she asks.
"I was just going to put reddish-brown," I respond with a shrug.
"No!" exclaims Annie. "You have to put something more interesting if your going to get picked," she says with a duh expression on her face.
"But it supposed to be random," chimes in Julia.
"Exactly," I agree.
"Please, Victoria. Put something like...," Annie stops to think. "Oh! Put dark mahogany!"
"That's perfect!" gushes Alessa.
"Fine," I say and put down "dark mahogany".
"The next one asks what color your eyes are," states Julia.
I sigh and say, "This is so stupid. If it supposed to random, why do I have to fill all of this out?"
Annie rolls her eyes and looks at me. "Who cares? Just fill out the form."
I nod and look back at my paper. I'm about to put "light brown" as my eye color when Alessa grabs my pen and quickly scribbles "hazel with flecks of blue".
"Alessa!" I exclaim.
"What?" she replies. "I knew you were going to put something stupid so I did it for you," she says with a smile.
I lean my head into my hand. This is a disaster I think to myself. I sigh and continue to fill out the form.
When I get to the part that asks what my special skills are, Annie says, "You should put drawing!"
"Oh! Also braiding hair!" Alessa states.
I shrug. My form is already ruined so it wouldn't hurt. I write down the two ideas and put the form back in the package. Annie finishes as well and puts away her form.
We both stand up and I realize that if I get selected, at least the food at the palace will be good.
