As I leave the City Hall, I see Annie running towards her house with Alessa not far behind. When I finally reach Annie's house, I can hear her crying from outside the house. I walk up to the front door to find it open.
I step inside and immediately walk towards Annie's room. When I look inside, I see her sitting on her bed crying and Alessa and Julia comforting her. I walk up and envelope Annie in a hug. She hugs back and cries into my shoulder.
"He knew! He, he knew I wasn't r-ready!" sobs Annie.
I sigh. "It's alright. Everything will be fine," I say as I rock her back and forth.
"No it won't!" she cries. "I'll never get picked!"
All four of us just hug each other and rock back and forth. After a few minutes, I stand up, wipe her tears and re-do her hair.
"Who cares what the prince thinks about your picture. If he is going to pick his wife based off of a picture, then I don't want to be selected. And neither should you." I state.
She looks up to me and gives a firm nod.
"You're right, Victoria," she says with new found power. "You are absolutely right! Let's not ruin this perfect day over some silly picture. Let's go have a picnic or go swimming or something."
Alessa and Julia jump up and say at the same time, "Swimming!"
"Swimming it is then!" I say.
Alessa and I go home and change into our swimsuits. After that, we meet Annie and Julia at the community pool. Julia and Alessa jump into the pool while Annie and I sunbathe on chairs.
"Well, if the Prince doesn't marry me, I'm sure one of the boys here might," she says as she looks around the pool.
I laugh and apply some sunscreen.
"When are the girls selected?" I ask
"Today, silly! It's Friday!" laughs Annie
Of course. Every Friday is the Report. I finish putting on sunscreen and lay back in my chair.
"Let's say I was selected," dreams Annie. "And let's say that I was still in the competition on my birthday. Wouldn't it be so cool to have my birthday at the Palace?" she asks excitedly.
I shrug. "Oh, come on Victoria!" she says as she playfully slaps my arm.
"I can just imagine it. I would be the envy of all the selected. And the Prince! Ah, he would sweep me off my feet and dance with me all night." explains Annie as she lets out a happy sigh.
We stay at the pool for a few hours and then head back to Annie's house. We dry off and settle onto her couch. The Report should be on in a couple of minutes.
While we're waiting, Julia made a joke about seeing Annie's picture on TV if she was selected. We all laugh at Julia's joke and Annie's sour face. Just then the Report turns on.
"Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the Report!" says the ever bubbly Gavril. Before my mom died, she told me that he has been the host on the show for a very long time.
"We are all tuned in today to see which lucky girls are going to participate in the selection. Let's talk to Prince Liam. The camera turned to the Royal Family. King Maxon and Queen America were seated next to each other with Prince Liam on one side and Princess Celia on the other.
Prince Liam has blonde hair like his father, but his mother's icy blue eyes. Princess Celia, who had just turned 16, has strawberry blonde hair and brown eyes.
The camera focused on the prince while Gavril asked him what he was looking for in a princess.
"Well, Gavril, I personally would like to have a princess that is creative, intelligent, and understanding," the prince responded.
"Well said, Prince Liam," said Gavril.
He then turned to the other members of the family and asked them the same questions but I was too focused on my own thoughts.
I thought he was going to say the usual self-centered characteristics like pretty and proper. Maybe the prince is not who I though he was.
I was pulled out of my thoughts as Alessa grabs my arm.
"The girls are about to be chosen!" she says excitedly.
Annie reaches for my hand and squeezes it. The first name is called.
"Helena Rosemary, Hudson," announces Gavril.
"Alice Ford, Whites,"
The screen is split to show the girls faces and also the princes face.
"Audrey York, Belcourt,"
"Annie Hastings, Bonita,"
The room erupts in screams. I go to hug Annie but she points to the screen.
Her picture is not shown. Mine is.
