Chapter 3
I woke up to the sound of the birds, and leaves rustling. Today was the day that I had to become closer to Darren. This seemed almost impossible. How would I do it? I didn't know. My first step was to at least have a conversation with him, and by the end of the week to have his number.
"Alex!! Wake up!! You're going to be late and it's only the second day!" my dad yelled.
I looked at the clock and noticed that it was 7:00 am. Shit. I needed to be ready by 7:20 am. I got ready by picking out a cute outfit; tights and a forever 21 top that had stripes. It was baggy and fit me well. I did my makeup, ate breakfast, and waited for Stefanie. She was on time and we got to school okay. Even though I hated the bus, with creepy people and smokers, it was my only way to school and I was already used to it.
Once we got to school, I spotted Darren at the corner of my eye. He was talking to this girl. I don't think she went to our school. Then, I saw him kiss her on the lips. And she left in her car. I think she was his ride to school, and his girlfriend. The part about him having a girlfriend didn't shock me, I mean the guy was a hottie. But, the way he looked at her did. He looked mad, like he was upset because she did something. This all seemed very fishy and I would get to the bottom of it.
Once we got into Math class, the teacher assigned us some work. She first taught us the lesson, which was like ten minutes and then we had to get to work right away. One thing that I noticed about grade 11 was that it was not going to be easy. It was the second day and so far it looked like we would have lots of homework.
I glanced at Darren, he was right behind me. I tried to start a conversation, but it only got me into trouble.
"We have so much work! Do you understand number 2?" I asked. I really didn't understand it, but it was also excuse to talk to him.
"It's easy. She did an example on the board. Do the same thing, but just use the numbers on the question" he muttered.
"Alex! Darren! Stop talking! One more time and you go to the principal and explain to him why your having a conversation instead of doing your work!" the teacher yelled.
Mrs. Smith was not very nice. Nobody liked her; maybe it was because of the fact that she got pissed easily. I couldn't help but laugh a little. I thought that I was being quiet, but apparently not. She looked at me and said:
"Alex! You find this funny?! Go to the prinicipal! Now!" she said.
Wow. It was just a little laugh, I thought. As I got up, I noticed that she wasn't done, and now the whole class was staring and paying attention.
"Darren! You find this funny too?! You kids are so immature! Go and follow Alex! Go to the office!" she yelled even louder.
Math was not turning out so well. Mrs. Smith needed to take a chill pill.
I didn't know that Darren laughed. Did I make him laugh? The thought of this made me happier. It made me think that maybe Darren thought I was okay. Or maybe he didn't, I didn't know.
We made our way into the office and waited. I soon realized that me and Darren were both waiting there in the the prinicpals office. Alone. At the beginning, it was kind of awkward. Then, things turned out okay. This was the day that me and Darren had a real conversation. Who knew that getting into trouble, could bring you closer to someone.
This was the day that I saw how Darren really was.
