Chapter 4
We were there in the office. All alone. I remembered about my new item in my bucket list, and thought that this might be my only chance to talk to Darren.
“Geez, Mrs. Smith is so mean don’t you think? Like we weren’t even doing anything.” I said.
I thought he wouldn’t respond, but he did.
“I know. All my other teachers where never like this. Even the bitchy ones.”
“Mrs. Smith is just like that. I hate her so much! But it was pretty funny though.”
“The whole thing was hilarious! I couldn’t stop laughing!”He said.
“Yeah. The funny thing is that we were doing work! We were actually talking about work! But she wouldn’t care; she’s just way too mean!”
We were just talking about the whole thing. I told him about how last year, she was even worse. She made every person that talked, miserable. She would ask the whole class what they were talking about, and would read notes aloud.
Then, the principal came in. He didn’t look very happy. He had a weird look in his face, and I could tell he was shocked to see me in here. I was a pretty good student and barely got sent to the office.
“So what brings you kids in here? Will I need to make any calls?” Principal Lee asked.
I spoke up and wanted to let him know that we didn’t do anything wrong.
“It was all my fault. I asked Darren about a question in math and all he did was answer. If there’s anyone to blame, it’s me” I quickly said.
“Sir, we didn’t mean to cause any harm really. I just want to fit in and I was just helping Alex. It’s my fault. Really. I shouldn’t have started laughing.” Darren added.
“Well, it looks like it isn’t anything really bad. And I really don’t want to make any phone calls. Consider this your warning. If I ever see this happen again, I will make a phone call. Understand?” the principal said.
We nodded and went to catch our next class.
Darren said bye and took off. Suddenly, many thoughts came into my head that I hadn’t thought of in the office.
Darren knew my name?! He took the blame?! Why was he so nice? I wondered all these things while I was walking down the hall. How did he know my name? Was it the day that we sat together in lunch, or when Mrs. Smith took attendance? Maybe Darren was noticing me. After all, he was new and the fact that he knew my name from all the girls chasing after him, made me feel good. It made me feel special, even though I knew I was overreacting.
I headed to my history class. I realized that Darren was also in that class. Why did he storm off? Didn’t he know I was in his history class?
I stepped into class and sat down. I wasn’t late and Stefanie was gesturing to me. She was asking why I was sent into the office. I gestured back, telling her that I would tell her later.
In the class, Mr. Johnson just took some notes, talked about the lesson and gave us a couple of questions. I finished them just in time and noticed something. Darren wasn’t in class. I knew he was in my class, he told me the day the first day at lunch.
Why wasn’t Darren going to history?
I heard my stomach gurgle and knew that I was hungry. I really wanted the first lunch period, but I got second. I got really hungry, but I knew that at least I was suffering with my friends, instead of eating lunch all alone. That would suck.
Me and Stefanie met Jake by the lockers, and headed out for lunch. Today was beans in the cafeteria, so we were all going to the pizza place near us. It was a plaza with starbucks, a convenience store and Pizza Pizza.
We headed out and I noticed Darren at the corner of my eye.
