My name is Yui Sugawara. I was born to be a heroine–or so my parents say. My hair was originally blonde, thanks to my grandmother's half-American blood, but I had it dyed black ever since middle school. My eyes were green before I intentionally read tons of books and manga and watched lots of TV shows so I could have a pair of brown contact lenses.

I never wanted to be a heroine. Based from the manga I have read, the heroines were always the focus of the story, and they were different from all other characters. They had weird colored hair, they were smart, they were noticably pretty, and they would get the man they wanted, but always going through painful experiences.

Well, because of that, I have become the most average person. I have the most plain looking face, average grades, average number of friends, and I'm an otaku. No one ever falls for an otaku at the start, right? Have you seen Watamote?

Today, my high school life begins. Most of these girls behind me are probably wishing for a heroine like life. They would dye their hair, wear make-up, confess to a senpai, get a boyfriend, possibly have ***, or something. A horribly cliché life, if I do say so myself.

After I left my things in the classroom of 1-B (my section), I went to the gym for the orientation. The year representative was apparently from class 1-A, and he was pretty handsome, too, but incredibly short. He was about my height–5'2"–possibly even shorter. He was honestly not my type. He seemed like the over achiever good boy that would use his pretty face to get anything he wanted.

And, of course, I just had to make eye contact while he was mid-speech. I rolled my eyes. Nope, stay away from the heroine path, Yui!

In the classroom, we had to draw papers for the seating arrangement. I unfortunately picked the one that would put me right beside the window. Nope, that's the heroine's throne. I scanned the room and saw a cute, shy girl with pink hair nervously looking around. I approached her, thinking she's the perfect heroine candidate, and told her we should exchange seats. The one she had was right beside mine so I guess that was okay.

She had a funny accent, which made her even cuter. Almost all the guys were looking at her. I mean, look at her boobs! She was naturally cute, no make-up or anything. Thank goodness, this girl will definitely push me on the sidekick role.

"Um, hello! My name is Sakura Kuroda. I'm from Osaka but I now live with my grandma. I'm in your care." She said in the introductions. Everyone swarmed her desk during lunch break, so I had to go to the rooftop. Of all the heroine things, the rooftop is the only one I could tolerate. It's peaceful here.

After classes, Sakura approached me, asking if I could accompany her home. This girl, seriously heroine material!

"Sure. Where do you live?" I asked.

"At Street X. You?"

"Just a few blocks after Street X. Let's go!"

On our way out the gate, we encountered the handsome representative from earlier. Shoot, I made eye contact again. I glanced at Sakura and she was totally red!

"Hello, I'm Kousuke Arima. I hope you had a wonderful day today, Miss...?"

He was looking at me but I tried to channel that look to Sakura, who was looking at him. I nudged her arm.

"I-I'm Sakura Kuroda, this is my classmate Yui Sugawara-chan. Nice to meet you." She squeaked.

"Do you mind if I walk with you home?" He asked.

I would have said, 'Yes, I do mind,' but Sakura was practically begging me to agree with that look she's giving me. So I agreed but stayed quiet all the way to Sakura's house. Her house was a modern one–small, but it seemed very cozy.

"I'll go on ahead. Bye, take care!" Sakura waved us good bye and went inside her house.

"So, shall I escort you home?" Arima asked.

"No." I shouted as I ran for my life. I did not want that person knowing where I live, nor do I want my parents to see me walking beside this perfect hero character.
