Dai-chan asked me to be the manager of the basketball club. I was okay at basketball, I knew the rules and how to play, but it was too main character-ish. Like, people would start to ship the manager and the captain (who, by the way, is Dai-chan), it would take too much of my time, and reverse harem. I wasn't against that, of course, 9 out of 10 girls want their own reverse harem. I am one of those 9.
Also, I was asked last year to be a manager for the volleyball team by a really beautiful senpai in glasses. But I still refused. I'm still the treasurer for the Student Council after all. I can't just have another job, that's too much for me.
I sat on the rooftop with Yoemon. We were waiting for Sakura and Dai-chan to finish assigned person duties and Arima to finish president duties. Rika texted me earlier saying she can't walk with us home.
"Suga," Yoemon groaned. "The group's gotten kinda big, don't you think?"
"Yeah. Before there was only you, Sakura, and me. Now there's Arima, Dai-chan, and Rika. . ."
"I was content when there was only three of us. Altough it would have been better if. . ."
"If what?" I asked.
"If. . . it were only the two of us."
There was an akward silence. I didn't know how to react to that. I mean, we were the only ones here so I didn't quite get what he said.
He scratched his head and stood up. "Forget about what I said. I'll be going on ahead."
I was pretty distracted on the way home. I could hear the others but it was like they were talking gibberish. Even though Yoemon told me to forget about it, I can't get it off my mind.
The next day, Yoemon wasn't at school and Dai-chan kept bothering me as usual.
"Yuicchi, why did you dye your hair? I like it blonde,"
"I didn't want to stand out."
"Why are you wearing brown contacts? You have pretty green eyes,"
"My eyesight is bad."
"Why are you still flat chested?"
"I-hey!" I punched his arm. "There's a little bump now."
"Why go through all the effort of being a plain person when you're actually gorgeous?"
I didn't reply.
You see, main characters go through a lot of dramatic stuff. Their parents would get separated, or someone close would die, or an unrequited love will stay like that forever, or the lover will leave. . . I don't like those kind of stuff. That's why I'm avoiding the main character path as much as I can. I don't want my parents to leave me and I don't want to lose my friends.
Back when I was in middle school-I still had my hair blonde that time-people would call me weird because of my hair and eye color. Until that time, I still believed I was a main character. But when my friends started turning their backs, I changed my appearance. Because of that, confessions stopped, my friends started talking to me again, and life was back to normal.
"Yuicchi," Dai-chan said with a serious tone. "Why won't you agree to be my girlfriend?"
"I-I don't know."
"Do you hate me?"
"No,"
"So why?"
"I don't want to be main character!" I blurted out.
"Yuicchi, your mentality of evading the main character path is clouding your decisions. Everything leads to something, whether you like it or not. You are the protagonist of your own life, your story." He said and deep down I believed it was true. I just don't what's holding me back.
