"Be my girlfriend, Yuicchi."
I choked. Wait, WHAT'S WITH THIS EXTREMELY CLICHE SHOUJO SCENE?!
"Excuse me, what was that?" I croaked.
"I said 'be my girlfriend, Yuicchi'."
"Yeah, I heard you the first time but. . . what?!"
Dai-chan began to tell me more about the promise that I apparently made. He said it happened in the summer before his family left.
"Uwaa, Yuicchi, I'll miss you!" He sobbed into my shirt.
"Geez, you're such a baby, Dai-chan. Listen, I can't protect you while you're away so be sure to get strong and come back when you're strong enough to protect me, okay?"
"WAIT!" I interrupted Dai-chan's flashback. "I never said anything about being your girlfriend!"
"I wasn't even finished yet. Let me continue."
"Yuicchi," Dai-chan continued to sob. "When I come back, will you be my girlfriend?"
"Huh? Yeah okay. Come back tall and with your teeth fixed."
"The End." Dai-chan said.
"Huh??!! I never promised?? I was probably distracted that time when I agreed."
I remember the first part now, the one where I said he should come back when he's strong enough to protect me. But the girlfriend promise? Nope. Sure, Dai-chan's good looking now, and is probably still as nice, but I still think this is too much of a main character thing.
Well, the summer ended peacefully, if Dai-chan's being constantly in my bedroom wasn't counted.
On the first day of my second year in high school, I left home too early and left my lunchbox. You could say I was excited about the new term. I was going to see Yoemon and Sakura again! We texted a lot during the summer break but nothing beats talking to the actual person, right? And also, they said they have souvenirs for me. Yay.
"Yui-chan!" Sakura squeezed me when we saw each other. "Good thing we're still in the same class. Yoemon and Kousuke-kun too!"
She shared about her summer back in Osaka. She helped her parents in their family business, met some old friends and she gave me a box of sweets. Arima better take care of this girl.
Yoemon came in carrying two paper bags, one for Sakura and one for me. Although mine was obviously bigger, Sakura didn't complain. Well, yay.
The bell rang and we all sat on our designated seats. Sakura reclaimed the main character throne, I sat on her left (again), Arima was in front of me, Yoemon was seated beside the chair next to me, which was empty.
"Okay class," said Mr. Haruto. "We have a new student. Please come in and introduce yourself, Mr. Asuma."
A tall guy came in and wrote his name on the chalk board.
"EHH?! Dai-chan?!" I said and he turned.
"Ah, Yuicchi. Sir, I'll sit beside her."
"Yui-chan/Sugawara, you know him?" Asked my classmates.
"Hello, I am Daiki Asuma and my goal in life is to make Yuicchi my girlfriend. I'm in your care." He bowed and walked toward his seat.
I sank back in my seat, feeling flustered. Who the heck says things like that in introductions? Jeez.
I could feel the eyes of my female classmates glaring daggers at me throughout the class. They were probably thinking, "Why would that handsome guy want someone like this plain girl?" or something. Anyway, it bothered me as much as Dai-chan grinning at me every chance he gets.
