11] Major Sahab's Anniversary

I had not even been finished with one chore when another demanded attention. Each day there was a never ending list of chores awaiting me. I had to give you undivided attention too.

Faaris had been great help when he had not gone to the operational area. When he was home, he would help me with some work and if not that, he would at least look after you when I was busy. Now that I was alone, I had to keep an eye on you all the time and do all the work.

When I washed dishes, I would let you play in the back yard as the I could easily see you there from the kitchen window. I would wash all the clothes early in the morning, before you woke up. When I took a shower, I would have to make sure that you were asleep. In short, it was hard. Caring for a toddler without any help was hard.

"Maaamaaa! Maaamaaa!" You banged on the door to the bathroom.

"Haider, Jaan, I'm coming." I replied. I couldn't just come out. I had shampoo in my hair.

But you didn't care.

You continued banging and crying. You screamed in anger. I tried my best to hurry. I had left you sleeping in my room and had gone to shower in the adjoining bathroom. However, for some reason, you had woken up abruptly and were now seeking immediate attention.

Needless to say, that my much needed shower was a disaster. I got out in such a hurry I wasn't able to completely wash out the shampoo.

I was highly angry with you when I came out and this time you were going to get it.

"Masla Kia hai tumhare sath? Aik minute kay liye bhi sukoon nahi karne dete!" I lashed out on you as soon as I opened the door.

You stopped crying for a second and looked at me with wide eyes. However, that was only for a second. You started crying at the top of you lungs again. I picked you up and put you on the bed.

"Rona bund! Chup! Chup! Chup hotay ho ya lagaoon aik thappar? (Stop crying! Quiet! Quiet! Will you be silent or do you want a slap?) " I scolded, looking down at you. You paid no heed to what I was saying, hence I slapped you on the back of your head.

Although it was only a light smack, you lost it. You closed your eyes a cried like I had hurt you badly.

"Haider! Aik aur aa raha hai! Chip Ho jao! (Haider! One more is coming! Be quiet!)" I shouted. I rarely shouted. Even my shouting was really low, but I was really frustrated with you.

Instantly you stopped crying and looked at me with your big brown eyes. Not a single tear could be seen in them.

I sat down next to you and smelled your diaper. It smelled horrible.

"Wha...? I only changed you an hour ago!" I exclaimed in surprise.

"Mama! Wo na, men ne na,  poo poo Kal di. (Mama! I have pooped.)" You said enthusiastically, like you had already forgotten what had happened.

"Yes, I can see that." I replied with a frown and picked you up to get you changed.

Once you were changed, o put you to sleep again and thankfully this time you didn't interrupt when I was taking a shower again.

May had gone by and June started. Although the days were long, they seemed longer.

Each day, I would await night when I would talk to Faaris.

June the eighteenth. The day we had been married. Our third wedding anniversary was in just a few more minutes. I called Faaris at exactly midnight.
