15] Flashback # 2

"Mama, story!" Haider exclaimed to his mother when she put him to bed.

"Okay.. which one? Um... what about a story about Hazrat Muhammad S.A.W?" Falak proposed and Haider nodded happily.

"Okay. A really long time ago-" Falak started but was interrupted by Haider, who innocently asked,

"Was I born?"

"No, Jaan, many many years ago when not even Dada Abbu was born and tv was not even invented, Allah sent Prophet Muhammad S.A.W to the world so that he could guide the humans. He was always very nice and very patient and-" Falak was yet again interrupted.

"Was he old?"

"What has that got to do with anything?" Falak was amused.

"Dada Abbu is nice." Haider responded.

"He was not old yet. He was very kind. He was Allah ta'ala's last prophet and he

was sent to the world to tell us what Allah ta'ala has commanded to us. So one day...." Falak narrated the event when a disbeliever woman used to habitually throw her garbage on Prophet S.A.W and one day she suddenly stopped. He visited her and found out that she was sick. Prophet S.A.W took care of her until she was well and then she converted to Islam.

When finally her son was asleep, Falak slipped out of the room and made her was to the kitchen. She opened the freezer and brought out a tub of ice cream. She then went to sit at the dining table that was placed in a corner in the living room. There, she let herself drown in her sorrows.

This had become a ritual for her. She never managed to eat a lot. She just sat there with a tub of ice cream which she slowly ate. Sleep was always miles away from her and she had stopped lying in her bedroom alone because it brought nothing but heartache.

She didn't bother to turn on the light. In deafening silence, she sat, with no one in her company but pain.

Why couldn't she just move on? Why was she stuck?  She didn't know. Maybe she didn't want to. Falak didn't look forward to anything, but her son's future.

Six years later; January 2012

"Assalam o Alykum, Mama." Haider called to Falak who had just entered their apartment. He continued to watch television.

"Walykum Assalam, How Haider! What is this?" Falak exclaimed in horror when she entered the living room.

"Nothing." Haider answered, his eyes never leaving the screen.

"This room is a mess! You said you'll be a good boy. Look what you- Haider Sanaullah! I'm talking to you! Turn off that thing!" This caught the boy's attention.

"But Mama-"

"I said turn it off." Falak said sternly. She was still very calm. She never became angry quickly.

"This is my favourite show, please Mama." Haider argued his mother.

"Why can't you understand a simple thing? I want that thing off." Falak started to get angry.

"No!"

"Haider! I will not tolerate this nonsense! What is wrong with you? Turn that piece of junk off or I'll throw it out! This room should be clean in fifteen minutes! And if it isn't, you have it coming!"  Falak stormed out of the room.
