Five.

Axel sat in the Gray Area with a glass of wine in his hand. Every member had one, except Roxas, Xion, and Demyx, who had settled for non-alcoholic champagne. Demyx was counting down with Luxord, who was very drunk already.

Four.

Saïx was, of course, glaring at everyone, which earned him glares from Axel, Zexion, and a few others. Xaldin and Xigbar didn't seem to care whatsoever. Xigbar was too busy bugging Larxene, and Xaldin was listening with a bored look.

Three.

Xion was chatting animately with Roxas about who knows what, while Lexaeus and Zexion enjoyed one another's silent and stoic presence. Marluxia was wedged between Vexen and Larxene, no doubt hoping for a kiss at midnight.

Two.

Xemnas stood by the window, gazing out at the heart shaped moon that was Kingdom Hearts.

One.

And Axel was lounging on a couch all on his own. He took a deep breath, closed his eyes, brought the glass to his lips...

Happy New Year.

He opened his eyes to see a room that was definitely not the Gray Area. It was covered with posters, drawings, and photos, with a small bookshelf next to the bed and a desk beside the dresser on the other side of the room, a closet without doors across from windows with thick curtains, and a mirror hanging on the door. This was, without a doubt, a girl's room.

Axel cursed under his breath. He'd forgotten that he had just turned twenty-two. He took a second, then smirked. Saïx had turned twenty-two that year as well. He pitied the poor man or woman who was the soulmate of his former friend.

The Nobody stood from his seat on the bed and went over to the mirror. The body he was in was certainly not his own; this body was female, with long, wavy brown hair and blue eyes, wearing a purple plaid shirt and jeans. He turned around again, noting that large letters hanging on the wall above the bed spelled out a name. Miranda.

With a glance to the clock on the dresser, Axel made a decision.

This would only last five minutes, that he knew for sure. It was already three minutes after midnight. He grabbed a pencil and a sheet of paper from the desk and scribbled a message:

Dear Miranda,

Sorry, sweetheart, but you're screwed when it comes to soulmates. I'd give up on me while you have the chance. Get yourself a nice guy. You've got the looks for it, and if those drawings are yours, the talent. You're welcome to my name, though. Four letters. You figure out the order. Bonus points if you figure out my real name, the one before I had this one. Got it memorized?

-VIII (X-L-A-E)

As soon as he set the pencil down, he was back in the Gray Area. He knocked back the wine, and, luckily, no one cared enough to stare at him or ask questions about his experience. He set his glass on the table, got up, and said, "I'm going to bed. This was a waste of my precious beauty sleep."
